Aerospace expert, Derek Greer, has joined data science consultancy Tessella, to grow the number and scale of data analytics projects it delivers to the aeronautics, space and defence industries. Such projects will help these industries make evidence-based business and operational decisions, improving profitability, reducing costs and errors, and driving innovation.
Greer brings 35 years experience in aerospace and defence, spanning roles in research, engineering, sales, business development and management.
Greer spent his early career between Southampton University and British Aerospace, Space & Communications (now Airbus ADS) in roles involving the application of mathematical approaches e.g. to attitude and orbit control systems, and laboratory based investigations of orbital surface chemistry interactions. During this time he completed a degree in aeronautics and astronautics, followed by a doctorate in engineering.
After leaving British Aerospace, Greer joined VEGA (later becoming Selex SI and Telespazio UK) where he worked for 24 years in various roles, including system engineering, project management, Space Services Director, and Head of Operations, Defence Consultancy. Since 2011 he has held the position of Chief Operating Officer for Telespazio VEGA UK, with responsibility for strategy, programme delivery and product innovation.
Greer is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. He has sat on numerous advisory bodies, has been a member of the UK Space industrial trade body council, and is chairman of the UK Space Agency’s Earth Observation Advisory Committee.
Having joined Tessella in October 2016, Greer is looking to focus Tessella’s broad data analytics capabilities towards addressing the scientific, business and operational challenges in the aerospace, defence and government markets.
Commenting on his appointment, Greer says: “I’ve been blown away with level of skill and professionalism right across Tessella. The capabilities and success in using data to find innovative answers to technical, engineering and business questions is unsurpassed in my experience. I want to continue that and step it up to deliver even more data projects with direct impact on the profitability of clients, and build long term scalable relationships with these clients that are constantly pushing them to be even more innovative”.
“This is an exciting time in aerospace and defence with data pushing the next wave of innovation – from industry 4.0 through to the challenges of big data from new space systems. Data, with the right analytics applied, can really help these industries get more out of their assets and investments, whether it’s identifying new lines of research, designing new engines, improvements in fuel efficiency, or reducing maintenance in manufacturing equipment. These challenges are highly technical and they need people who both understand data and have the industry knowledge to appreciate what that data means. Tessella has that unique blend of expertise, and I’m very excited to be heading up this part of the business.”
