DGA Update: Government Programs Can Help Dairy Farmers During Crisis
Source: Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota
- By: Angie WalterIf you are currently dairy farming or looking into dairy farming, you know that the price of milk is not looking good. The coronavirus pandemic has thrown the economy into a recession. Prices on commodities have been dropping and we are even hearing that milk trucks in Wisconsin are being dumped on fields because there is nowhere to process them. Restaurants have dropped their contracts and the machines that processed the butters and cheese for restaurants cannot just be easily switched over to processing something else. This is a scary time, but there are some options I want to share with you that may help.
The CARES act was released by the government to help during this crazy time. They are helping us in three ways: Economic Impact Payments, EIDL (Economic Injury Disaster Loan) and the PPP (Payment Protection Program). Everyone who filed taxes should receive the Economic Impact Payments. Full-time farmers will not qualify for the EIDL but are eligible to apply for the PPP (payment protection program) if they have at least one employee. For more information, click here. This resource is helpful because it includes examples that would be used in farmers’ situations.
