There were some exciting announcements in farming this week as Defra revealed 15 agri-tech projects that are due to receive a share of £18 million from the Government and industry to help speed up agriculture innovation and their commercial viability. According to Farmers Guardian, they are the first industrial research awards to be funded by the £70 million Agri-Tech Catalyst, which is charged with the task of making the UK’s farming sector a world leader in agricultural science, innovation and sustainability.
The new funding will help promising technologies to bridge the gap between the work and laboratory and its implementation on farms and other areas relating to the food chain. All led by British companies, they span three key areas of the agricultural sector: crops, livestock and aquaculture.
Some of the most notable project include:

> The use of light to extend shelf-life of fresh
> Ground and aerial sensors to improve wheat production and breeding
> The development of antimicrobial technology to control disease in potato production
So some exciting, innovative projects in the pipeline, thanks to government funding and the focus of Defra.
