Farming Family proud - The Rankin Family
Meet the Rankin family from Werrimull, Victoria.
Don and Carolin Rankin own Broadacre – a 6000 acre property that’s been in the family for three generations.
At Broadacre, the Rankins grow cereal and pulses and agist livestock over the summer months.
In an average year their region receives around 250mL of rain, which means that the Rankins have committed to continuous experimentation and innovation to ensure the health of their soil and future of their business.
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO THE INDUSTRY?
“We are a 3rd generation farming family, so it’s in our blood,” says Don.
“We never considered doing anything else, and our kids are part of the business too.”
WHAT’S THE BEST PART ABOUT OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
Carolin says that they love the flexibility of owning their own business. The family-oriented lifestyle means they can make the time to encourage and educate their family about the importance of caring for the soil, animals and their own health.
“Our family has always been involved with the day-to-day running and working of the farm, which is something that many other industries don’t have the flexibility to do.”
WHAT’S THE BEST PART ABOUT LIVING AND WORKING OUTDOORS?
“The lifestyle is great,” says Carolin. “Not being tied down in the office all the time, unless needing to get bookwork done!”
“The family work-life balance and involving the kids in the farm is the best part,” says Don. “We are able to take time off after harvest for some much needed family holidays, too.”
