The renowned beauty and culture of NSW heritage sites will be further enhanced through as part of the Australian Government's $650 million Jobs Fund.
'I am pleased to announce that for example, $917,200 will be used to improve a 45km network of walking tracks through Australia's 'Green Cauldron National Landscape' within the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area,' Mr Garrett said.
'The Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area comprises five major recognised rainforest types in pockets of land in New South Wales and Queensland.
'It is vital that infrastructure projects, such as provision of high standard walking tracks, are undertaken to protect the values of this area and enhance visitors' experiences.'
'All projects will provide a range of employment opportunities for local communities with recruitment on some projects to also target local Aboriginal people, providing them with an opportunity to work on country while gaining practical skills,' Mr Garrett said.
'It will also provide a boost to local economies with materials for the construction works being sourced from local suppliers. These projects clearly demonstrate how the Government's Jobs Fund is having an immediate impact on local communities by developing skills and enhancing economic opportunities' Mr Garrett said.
Mr Garrett also announced $852,700 funding for a world-class interpretative display at the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area.
'Willandra traces the story of a changing climate that once fostered fertile lake shores and later arid sand dunes, and it reveals Indigenous people's responses to that change,' Mr Garrett said.
'Willandra has an exceptional archaeological record of Indigenous people's continuous occupation over the past 50,000 years including artifacts and a set of fossilised human footprints.
'With the Human Fossil Trackway site too delicate for general tourism access, this high quality interactive display will play an important role in raising awareness of the scientific and cultural importance of the region. The display will also tell Willandra's story of human adaptation to climate change on the Australian continent.'
Funding of $1 million will also go towards supporting an upgrade of visitor access to the Historic Audley Precinct in Royal National Park. The project will upgrade the precinct's roads, car parks, toilets picnic shelters, barbeque facilities, signage, boat and bicycle leasing facilities, pedestrian linkages and access in the National Heritage-listed area. Of the $650 million Jobs Fund, $60 million was directly available for projects relating to Australia's historic, Indigenous and natural heritage places.
'This is the largest investment ever made in Australian heritage conservation. It recognises the crucial role that heritage conservation can and does play in stimulating the economic health of communities and in turn, the nation,' Mr Garrett said.
The $60 million for community heritage projects has been developed in consultation with Senator Bob Brown as part of the Australian Government's Jobs and Training Compact.
The Project announcements are part of the second round of the Jobs Fund heritage initiative, with $12.7 million already allocated in round one to more than 30 heritage conservation projects around Australia.
