High Levels of Penicillium Indoors can Trigger Asthma and Allergies
Sussex Environmental Health Consultants provide comprehensive indoor air quality (IAQ) investigations to resolve indoor mold problems.
Lewes, DE, May 21st, 2012 -- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “The most common indoor molds are Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Alternaria.” These same molds, when found in high levels in indoor environments, can trigger asthma attacks, allergies and in some cases lead to fungal infections.
One of the Mid-Atlantic’s leading indoor air quality consulting firms that have been on the forefront of helping people identify and resolve problems due to Penicillium and other molds is Sussex Environmental Health Consultants (SEHC). “Penicillium spores are often present in the air and dust in homes, offices and schools that we investigate for mold problems,” reported Susan White, Ph.D., CMC, President of SEHC. “There are over 300 species of Penicillium. When their spores settle on places where there is excessive moisture, such as where roofs and windows leak, plumbing failures have occurred, or where there has been flooding, they can begin to grow and multiply. Many building materials provide suitable nutrients that encourage mold to grow. High levels of Penicillium, or other molds, are not something you want to have in your home or place of business,” she continued.
Many species of Penicillium can thrive in environments with low humidity. This allows the fungi to colonize indoor environments better than many other types of fungi. In addition to causing allergic reactions in many people and potentially acting as an asthma trigger, a number of Penicillium species also produce mycotoxins. These toxic secondary metabolites include Ochratoxin, Citrinin, and Patulin. Penicillium marneffei is a pathogenic species of Penicillium that has become a growing opportunistic pathogen, particularly for people suffering from AIDS.
SEHC recently sponsored an educational video to help educate people about Penicillium that can be seen at:
