There is a serious problem of lack of water worldwide, so much in quantity as in quality, due to different facts as low rainfall, high evaporation or the increase in the demand of water for different uses. This fact is favouring the search and use of non-conventional sources of water, which guarantee the continuous availability of water to its use in agriculture and landscaping. The use of the waste water for irrigation is ceasing to be only one alternative of reuse to acquire a greater role as cost effective solution.

The reuse of waste water is normally regulated by the specific law of each country, determining the criteria of quality from the basis of the use of the treated water (urban, agricultural, industrial), as well as the responsabilities of all involved.

The use of treated water in irrigation has numerous economic and agronomical advantages, as important environmental benefits:

  • Increased volumes of irrigation water, increasing the volume per unit of surface and / or extension of the irrigation areas.
  • Guaranteed availability along the time; without the seasoning established by the rainfall.
  • Less use of fertilizers: the contain in nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and other nutrients essential for the plants is higher in the urban waste water, so its use allows to reduce the supply of fertilizers.
  • Geographical proximity: the POTWs are placed near the irrigation areas.
  • It permits to increase the availability of the conventional hydric resources for different uses with higher level of requirement in quality.
  • The volume of waste water is reduced, also the contaminants, contributing to the preservation of rivers and seas.
  • Energetic saving, against other alternatives as transfers of water or desalination.
