M&S first retailer to convert mini wine range to PET
From this month, Marks and Spencer will become the first retailer to convert its entire range of mini 25cl wine bottles from glass to PET.
This move is set to save the retailer 525 tonnes of packaging a year, equivalent to 747 jumbo jets, and will be extended to all 19 white, red and rose wines which are available in the 25cl size.
The mini bottles are 88% lighter than the previous glass bottles and are significantly more eco-friendly not only because of the amount of packaging saved but also because less energy is required to manufacture them.
Marks and Spencer has been working with Paul Sapin and Roger Harris Wines to develop a new oxygen barrier technology for the bottles which is guaranteed to keep the wine fresh for at least 12 months.
M&S winemaker Belinda Kleinig said: “This is really exciting for M&S as it means our customers can enjoy the same great quality wine but in much lighter bottles, which is not only easier for them to carry, but better for the environment.”
The PET wine bottles are made using two layers of polyethylene terephthalate and a barrier material in between which blocks oxygen from entering the bottles.
Sainsbury's has already introduced PET for its 75cl bottles but not yet for its small bottle range. Waitrose is also launching a Shiraz and Chenin Blanc in a 75cl plastic bottle.
