Mondi profit loss indicates bow out from UK market
Source: Materials Recycling Week
International paper and packaging manufacturer and supplier, Mondi Group has reported it expects a full year loss after its operating profits for 2009 fell by more than 20% compared to the year before.
The company is due to publish end of year results on 23 February in the wake of multiple UK plant closures. Mondi’s Holcombe brown paper plant, which was based in Bury and produced 105,000 tonnes of recycled container board annually, closed in 2008. It is currently approaching the end of the decommissioning process scheduled for the end of March, this year.
A Mondi Packaging Holcombe spokesman at the plant said: “We are just stripping out the two machines now – there’s nothing here.”
A corrugated cardboard box plant based in Scunthorpe was closed last year and Mondi has three sites remaining in the UK based in Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and North Wales.
It announced last month that it was in talks to sell these - its entire UK corrugated operations - to Dublin-based packaging company, Smurfit Kappa. Smurfit Kappa has its head office for UK corrugated operations based in Bristol.
