Post-election winners and losers in US private water
Source: Global Water Intelligence (GWI)
The US election was not just about who becomes the next president – in a series of referenda around the country, voters chose whether to allow the private sector to play a role in the future of their water systems.
In Bellflower, California, citizens voted in favour of selling their water system to American Water for $17 million, although the residents of Westville, New Jersey, voted down Aqua America’s proposal to purchase their water systems for $8.4 million – despite the mayor throwing his weight behind the privatisation campaign.
Meanwhile in Apple Valley, California, ratepayers voted through a measure which means the City would require voter consent to raise utility-related debt in excess of $10 million, which it will certainly need to do if it is to achieve its aim of buying the Apple Valley Ranchos Water Company from investor-owned Liberty Utilities. The system has been valued in excess of $50 million.
