Researchers Identify Important Energy Cost Savings in Poultry Processing
Tucker. Georgia -- USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation announce the completion of a funded research project the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Ark., that identified important energy costs savings in poultry processing- The project is part of the Association's comprehensive research program encompassing all phases of poultry and egg production and processing. A brief summary of the completed project is shown below. A complete report, along with information on other Association research, may be obtained by going to USPOULTRY's website, www.uspoultiT.org. The project summary is as follows:
Project #677: Energy Balance Analysis of a Poultry Processing Plant
(Dr. Yi Liang: Dr. Dain Nutter, P.E.; and Mr. Chase Harding, P.E.. CEM; University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Ark.)
The research project, led by Dr. Yi Liang and a group of co-investigators, made a detailed analysis of the electrical and natural gas usage of each operation and process within the plant over a period of time. Their analysis allowed them to determine the actual energy usage during each process. Fifteen measures were identified that if fully implemented could save over $378,000 annually on utility bills, with an average simple payback of three years or less. This research demonstrates the potential efficiencies still to be gained in modem processing facilities and will serve as a catalyst for companies to examine the energy usage in their own facilities.
