Scotland’s recycling rate continues to rise
Scotland’s recycling and composting rate continues to make steady progress. Figures released by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), reveal that Scotland’s recycling and composting rate is 32.2% for the rolling year July 2007 to June 2008. The recycling and composting rate for the first quarter of 2008/9 (April to June) is 35.5%. Kenny Boag, SEPA’s National Waste Policy Unit manager, said: “Today’s figures are another step in the right direction. Our recycling and composting figures continue to make steady progress year on year.
“Scotland has surpassed the 2008 target of 30% recycling and composting. This is as a direct result of continued efforts from the public to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste and ambitious efforts taken by local authorities to introduce new recycling services.
“While today’s figures are a positive indicator of progress, it is essential we continue our efforts to minimise waste growth and maximise recycling if we are to meet our aims of moving towards a zero waste Scotland.”
Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said: “I am pleased that local authorities have again improved on their recycling performance. It is an important step forward on our journey towards zero waste.
“However we are not complacent and recognise that we need to increase our effort with local authorities to make further improvements to recycling services.
“We also want to build on the recent launch of our ‘Go Greener’ campaign and keep up momentum. Many of us are already recycling more - let’s make it normal behaviour for everybody.”
