SG Biofuels Appoints Dr. Jerry Caulder as Chairman
SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/22/12 -- SG Biofuels, Inc. (SGB), an energy crop company delivering high performance bioenergy solutions for the renewable fuel, biomass and chemical markets, has appointed Jerry Caulder, Ph.D., as chairman of the board.
Dr. Caulder, currently chairman of Finistere Ventures, has a distinguished track record in the plant sciences industry and is often referred to as the 'father of agricultural biotechnology.' From overseeing early venture investments and the launch of new global agricultural products for Monsanto to leading numerous plant science companies to significant valuations, Caulder brings to SGB more than 40 years of management and leadership experience.
'Dr. Caulder's track record managing successful, high-value companies in the agricultural biotechnology space is a tremendous asset for SGB as we enter the next stage of our growth and development,' said Kirk Haney, president and CEO.
Following fifteen years at Monsanto, in 1984 Dr. Caulder became chairman and CEO of Mycogen, a start-up plant sciences company. Under his direction, Mycogen had a successful IPO and was acquired by Dow Agrosciences in 1998 with a market capitalization of more than $1.2 billion.
Since the acquisition of Mycogen, he has held leadership positions in a number of highly successful companies. His most recent success was as chairman of Athenix, Inc., a venture-backed plant sciences company acquired in 2009 by Bayer Crop Sciences for $400 million. He has been involved in the formation of many local, state and national biotechnology groups and initiatives, including serving as chairman of BIO, the world's largest biotechnology advocacy and business development organization.
In January, SGB completed a $17 million Series B financing led by Thomas, McNerney & Partners with participation from Finistere Ventures and current investors Flint Hills Resources, LLC and Life Technologies Corporation. With a crop improvement program focused on the development and deployment of elite hybrid varieties of Jatropha, SGB now has operations in the United States, Central America, Brazil and India and a global team of more than 70 employees focused on breeding, plant genomics, agronomy, and corporate and business development.
