TC Growers Update: ‘So You Want to Start a Farm’ Registration Open
Source: Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota
- By: Jason WalkerAssistance is always important when starting a market farm or attempting to access land. Community help, mentors, partners and expertise are required to successfully get your farm business off the ground, and SFA’s Twin Cities Growers Network is partnering with U. of M. Extension for two upcoming workshops that will explore these topics.
First, TC Growers coordinator Karl Hakanson will lead a Zoom discussion on what it takes to get a start in farming and market gardening. We will be joined by Jake Jarecki, who started Feed Me Farm and will provide a (virtual) tour of his new mini farms. Using Jake’s startup as a case study, we will explore the key aspects that need to come together when starting a farm. Sai Thao, Compeer Financial, will discuss the financing Jake received to get started, and the availability of microloans for small, startup farms. Staff from The Good Acre (invited) will share their experiences helping farmers market successfully. Like face-to-face networking, come with your questions and experiences! REGISTER.
Next we’ll explore one of the most challenging aspects of starting a farm: accessing land. This virtual discussion, “Finding Farmland in the Metro,” is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sun., June 7, and will explore success stories and ideas for resources and assistance. Join experts from Renewing the Countryside, Big River Farms, TC Ag Land Trust and others for this important discussion. Registration coming soon at the TC Growers homepage.
