A recent soy-checkoff-funded promotional campaign showed Mexican shoppers the benefits of cooking with U.S. soybean oil, leading to a 15 percent jump in sales.
Mexico is a major international destination for U.S. soy. In the most recent marketing year, Mexican customers imported more whole U.S. soybeans and soybean oil than any other country except for China.
To increase that demand even more, the checkoff-funded U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) conducted a soybean oil promotional campaign in Mexican supermarkets.
USSEC partnered with a soybean oil refinery in Mexico that uses 33 million bushels of U.S. soybeans per year to promote a brand of bottled “Pure Soybean Oil” in supermarkets.
“Mexico is a very important market that we want to sustain,” says Larry Marek, soy checkoff farmer-leader from Riverside, Iowa. “Mexico is close to home, so it’s an economic advantage for both of us because of transportation.”
USSEC’s promotional launch of this 100 percent soybean oil increased sales by 15 percent. The campaign included special in-store displays to educate Mexican consumers on the benefits of soybean oil compared with other edible oils.
American consumers can also buy soybean oil in the grocery store. Just look for bottles labeled “vegetable oil,” and check the ingredients to make sure it contains soy.
