Winery Recycles 1.35M Gallons of Wastewater in 1st Year of Operation…
In the spring of 2017, BioMicrobics paired its BioBarrier HSMBR treatment system with ZCL | Xerxes underground fiberglass tanks at Castello di Amorosa winery. The new system replaced concrete tanks and a leach field, which had failed. By June 2018, In its first year of operation, this Napa Valley Winery’s new wastewater system treated and reused 1.35 million gallons of water. That’s the amount of water that the winery would have had to source from somewhere else.
Custom pairing of treatment system and tank
Both the BioMicrobics system and ZCL - Xerxes wastewater tanks can be custom designed and manufactured so they are scaled to fit the specific requirements of any winery. That can range from a single-tank installation to a multi-tank installation.
The Castello di Amorosa Winery, which recycled 1.35 million gallons of treated wastewater, with a Napa Green-certified MBR wastewater treatment system application highlights:
- 1.35 million gallons of wastewater treated and reused in first year of operation
- Tanks and treatment system are a high-efficiency, low-maintenance pairing
- Winery wastewater treatment with BioMicrobics and ZCL | Xerxes is now Napa Green-certified
- Corrosion resistance of fiberglass is advantage in winery’s acidic soil
- Three 22,000-gallon fiberglass water tanks (10-foot-diameter)
The fiberglass tanks are corrosion-resistant, inside and out, which is a major advantage when they are buried in a winery’s acidic soil. They come in a variety of diameters and capacities. The three ZCL | Xerxes 22,000-gallon/ 83,000-liter fiberglass water tanks replaced the previous concrete tanks. Each tank’s system operates independently to meet a winery’s water needs, which can vary significantly day to day. During the most water-intensive times — for instance, when wine is bottled and barrels are washed — all three tank systems run.
A BioMicrobics’ BioBarrier HSMBR (High Strength Membrane Bioreactor) treatment system was installed inside each tank. Placed inside the ends of the tanks, the aeration grids below the membrane modules promote aerobic microbes that metabolize and digest the wastewater and then passes through the membranes for ultrafiltration. The treated water is then 99.9% removed of the contaminants and discharges out of the ZCL | Xerxes Tank. BioBarrier MBRs and HSMBRs are membrane aerated biofilm reactor technologies certified for onsite and water reuse applications. These packaged wastewater treatment plants solve a range of challenging site conditions and wastewater strengths. Certified for water reuse (NSF/ANSI 40/245/350, EN12566-3, and CAN/BNQ 3680-600), the BioBarrier Membrane BioReactors (MBRs) and BioBarrier HSMBRs are complete, optimized wastewater and greywater systems that provide high levels of treatment.
The immersed, aerated, membrane technology utilized in the BioBarrier Systems allows for installation into a smaller footprint with both above or below ground tank options. The BioBarrier MBR and HSMBR, from 250 GPD to 100,000+ GPD flows, meet water quality requirements for the reduction of chemical and microbiological contaminants for non-potable water use. The treated wastewater (i.e. high-quality effluent) can be used for restricted indoor water use and/or unrestricted outdoor water use.
This pairing is a turnkey package, so wineries don’t have to deal with multiple vendors for their water and wastewater needs. It is also low-maintenance, which means small wineries with limited staffing can easily manage the system.
How the system works
The BioBarrier system’s flat-sheet membranes (with 0.03 to 1.3 micron pores) physically separates solids and bacteria from the wastewater.
- Aeration grids below the membrane modules promote aerobic microbes that metabolize and digest the wastewater.
- The wastewater then passes through the membranes for ultrafiltration.
- The solids and bacteria remains in the tank.
- The tank can hold up to one year of waste sludge.
The treated water (high-quality effluent) exits the tanks using a small, submerged filtrate pump.
- The treated water is 99.9% removed of the contaminants.
- The “ultrafiltration” BioBarrier HSMBR system in each ZCL | Xerxes tank can treat up to 6 gallons per minute.
- In a 24-hour period the system (all three tanks) can treat up to 9,000 gallons.
- The resulting clean water can be reused in numerous ways, including vineyard irrigation and landscaping.
After installing its new wastewater treatment system and tanks, the winery and its land were Napa Green-certified, which means they meet all the regulatory components needed for environmental sustainability, including water conservation and water efficiency.
