- Feeder

Ad-lib feeder from ACO FUNKI is a feeder for lactating sows, where the sow can decide for herself how much she would like to consume from day 1 to weaning. Ad libitum lactating sow feeding helps to improve feed intake, litter weaning weight and sow reproduction and is a growing trend in the hog industry. Ad-lib feeder from ACO FUNKI allows the sow to mix feed and water in one feed, with no clogging, to take advantage of the many benefits of free choice feeding of sows in farrowing crates.

A recently completed two-year trial by the University of Guelph (USA) showed a 1.7 piglets per litter increase in subsequent litters for lactating sows using free choice feeders versus other lactating sow feeding methods.

The research showed that there are significant benefits to having feed and water in one feeder.

  1. “Conventional” was feeding as much as the sow wishes (full feed) from day 3 onward.
  2. “Semi Ad Lib” was such that the amount is slowly ramped up to ad libitum over 13 days. On day 1, sows received 2.0 kg of feed, on days 2 and 3 sows received 3.0 kg of feed. From days 4 to 8 sows were ramped up as quickly as possible to 1.8 kg + 0.6 kg/piglet of feed. When this target level was attained, it was maintained until day 12. From day 13 onwards, the sow was fed ad libitum.
  3. “Ad lib” feeding method was self-feeders where the sow could decide for herself how much she would like to consume from day 1 to weaning. The treatments were applied over 3 parities in order to determine what the longer term effects of the various feeding regimes would be. All sows were fed the same diets across treatments (gestating and lactating rations).
