Seed Treatment: Insurance That Pays
Deep tillage, a well-known technique of plowing prior to sowing in order to minimize weed growth, is thought to contribute to soil erosion. Alternative weed management programs exist, such as using new agricultural machines that cut through the previous crop's stubble to plant seeds. This is called, reduced tillage, zero-tillage or conservation tillage. According to Dr. X B Yang, Ph.D. at the Iowa State University, 'the risk of certain disease in no-tillage fields is significantly increased'.
In order for crop seeds that are planted using reduced tillage to stand a chance against invading fungi, they need protecting. Treating the seeds before planting by coating them with a fungicide shields them from invading fungi like a suit of armor.
One crop used to protect another
Sugarbeet is highly purified to produce lactic acid, one of the elements needed to formulate APRON XL and APRON MAXX. It is interesting to note that one crop can contribute towards the production of a seed treatment, which is used to protect other crops from disease.
A little goes a very long way
Mefenoxam (ISO name Metalaxyl-M), the name of APRON XL's active ingredient, is classified as a 'reduced risk' compound by EPA due to its favorable environmental profile and its notably low use rate.
APRON XL was launched in 1996 and not only responds to growers' needs for effective disease control but also demonstrates Syngenta's commitment to minimizing the application of chemicals whilst retaining protection efficacy. In fact, as little as one gram of APRON XL is sufficient to protect one hectare of crop! The current formula only contains half the isomer structure of a former version, as Syngenta chemists were able to isolate the active isomer. Even though the previous formulation of this fungicidal seed treatment had a very low application rate, progress and improvement are constant aims.
Two APRON Brands to Cater for Different Needs:
Growers use APRON XL to ensure that the seeds that are sown will germinate. Seeds treated with APRON XL increase the yield and vigor of many vegetable, field, oil and fiber crops, which means that fewer crops are destroyed and a minimal amount of replanting is necessary.
The formulation of APRON XL is registered worldwide and has met with much enthusiasm due to the fact that the active ingredient being original to Syngenta. APRON XL has an outstanding control of downy mildews on many crops. It is also an effective control of Pythium and Phytophtora, which affect most crops.
APRON MAXX is a complete seed treatment for soybeans and contains mefenoxam and fludioxonil, designed to control a broad spectrum of fungal diseases affecting soybeans. It can be combined with liquid inoculants as a slurry. This formulation is available as a concentrate to minimize packaging or as an RTA, which means ready to apply, so no mixing or dilution is necessary. APRON MAXX is a combination of APRON XL and MAXIM 4FS, both fungicides being classified as reduced risk by EPA.
Soybean production practices are changing. As with other crops, soybean seeds are planted using reduced tillage in a cooler, wetter seedbed. Planting earlier helps to maximize the crop's yield and in warmer climates the added benefit with planting earlier is avoiding summer drought. Applying APRON MAXX assists germination by protecting the seeds and shoots from disease. The grower saves time and financial resources because there is little need to replant and as the crop grows, an early canopy cover suppresses weeds, enabling the grower to enjoy the prospect of a safe harvest.
