- Subsea System

Aqualine Subsea System is a system that can contribute to solving salmon louse problems in the aquaculture industry. This system is environmentally friendly and contributes to improved fish welfare.

Aqualine Subsea System is a net cage with a submerged net that is based on the our patentedMidgard® System and that requires a slight adaptation to the existing Midgard net. An upgraded system of cages, adapted nets, sinker rings and winches has resulted in a complete submersible cage system facility.

By using a winch to submerge the net with a ‘net lid’ to 10 metres, the fish end up under the louse zone, which is usually at a depth of 10 metres. Studies and measurements have shown that the quantity of louse below this zone is reduced considerably or disappears entirely, while a new increase is avoided.

To ensure that the fish have access to air to fill their air bladder, the net cage can be raised as often as desired and the salmon 'aired' for around two hours. When using the patentedMidgard® System winch system, it takes around one minute per metre to raise and lower the net. The top of the net is covered with a ‘net lid’.

When submerged, marine growth is also reduced significantly, an additional advantage since we know that louse larvae thrive in large numbers in areas with marine growth. The conditions at each individual location will determine the need to clean both the net and lid.

At SINTEF Marintek’s ocean laboratory, the Aqualine Subsea System is tested at 7 and 13 metres from the ‘cylinder head’ and up, with current speeds of up to 0.7 metres per second and significant wave heights of up  to 9 metres, corresponding to wave heights of no less than 18 metres. The tests showed that the load on the net construction when submerged is lower than with traditional operations. The results also showed that the Aqualine Subsea System is highly suitable for use at exposed locations, thereby also paving the way for the possible use of new production areas that do not conflict with other interests.
