CBI - Stump Shear
The CBI Stump Shear pulls, backfills, shears, splits & loads – making 'hog feed' out of the biggest stumps and butt logs at a rate of 50 tons or more per hour! This rugged Shear utilizes two ripper teeth to pull stumps out of the ground, then the steel plate backfills the stump hole. With the power of dual action cylinders, the massive knife shears/splits the most difficult stumps. Shearing stumps removes most dirt and rocks thereby reducing wear and tear on the grinder as well as allowing stumps to be ground to a much higher quality fuel. The CBI Stump Shear requires a 55,000 - 100,000-pound class excavator with an auxiliary hydraulic line for the additional piston.

Description
CBI’s Stump Shear grubs, pulls, backfills, shears, splits, and loads... making “hog feed” out of the biggest stumps and butt logs at a rate of 50 tons or more per hour! Two massive ripper teeth pull stumps out of the ground, while the reinforced steel plate backfills the stump hole. When grubbing and excavating stumps, the dual action cylinder allows the knife to retract fully out of the way. By not remaining fixed in a low position; it does not interfere with work or cause unnecessary stress to shear or excavator. Operator visibility is also greatly improved by retracting the knife blade, which leads to more effective operations. The extra wide shear opening allows the largest stumps to be sheared to the proper size for processing. This helps to remove most dirt and rocks, which greatly reduces wear and tear on your grinder as well as allowing stumps to be ground to a cleaner and much higher quality fuel product. Sheared and prepared material also drastically increases grinder production.
CBI’s Stump Shear is available in three sizes: SS25 weighs 5,500 lbs. and fits on a 55,000-65,000 lb. class excavator; SS30 weighs 7,000 lbs. and fits on a 65,000-90,000 lb. class excavator; and SS40 weighs 8,000 lbs. and fits on a 90,000-110,000 lb. class excavator. The dual action shear uses the bucket curl function of the excavator to power the lower jaw, allowing grubbing and pulling stumps to have the same operator feel as digging with a standard bucket. The two hardened ripper teeth grub out the root structure then excavate the entire stump. An auxiliary cylinder powers the massive T-1 steel knife assembly through the stump, log or root ball. In addition, greater splitting force is applied to material by both jaws being driven by its own cylinder.
In ground or out, the Stump Shear is built with the same rugged durability you have come to expect from CBI. Every component—from the specially designed ripper teeth, to the large diameter high strength alloy pins, to the T-1 steel knife assembly with replaceable cutting edge—are painstakingly designed and crafted from the finest materials available to give you maximum performance and the longest useful life in this demanding application. Don’t waste precious time and hard-earned money on less capable, less durable contraptions. CBI’s Stump Shear is custom configured to always out perform and outlast all others in the toughest severe duty applications.
Assembly
The upper jaw is a specially-designed knife made of T-1 steel. The knife has a large diameter cylinder with a customized mounting assembly reinforced to the underside of the stick boom. This allows the knife to be used efficiently to shear large pieces of wood such as poles, pilings, logs and stumps. The tip or “beak” of the knife is specially designed to have an aggressive angle to initiate the cut and penetrate the wood efficiently for the greatest production and least amount of stress transfer to the shear and excavator. The lower jaw has two hard-faced, heavy-duty ripper teeth at the front designed to grub and uproot stumps. It allows the CBI Shear to engage stumps and root balls in the ground efficiently, allowing unmatched strength and versatility. The back has a thick alloy steel plate designed to move material away from the excavator as well as backfill the stump hole.
Hydraulics
Control is accomplished by a 2-way flow control valve. Hard line plumbing is used on the boom and flexible hose is used from the boom to the stick valve and to the cylinder. The cylinders require a hydraulic system capable of delivering 45-60 gpm at a 3500-5000 psi operating pressure. The ports use SAE-12 O-rings and are both located at the boom end of the cylinder. The cylinder has a bolted rod head construction and has an operating psi of 5000 psi. (Clevis bracket and cylinder supplied by CBI.)
