DryerMaster - Model DM510 - Computerized Drying Control System
The DM510 is a computerized drying control system for continuous flow grain dryers, designed to help you take the guesswork out of drying. It can be installed when you are putting up a new dryer or as a retrofit to your existing dryer. The DM510 is backed by 30 years of Dryer Master drying control experience on a full range of grain dryers worldwide - including GSI, NECO, Mathews M-C, Grainhandler, Cimbria, Law-Marot, Mega, Dorssers, Zimmerman, Sukup, Delux, Shanzer, and many more.
The key elements of the DM510 system are the control panel, the real-time moisture sensors at the inlet and outlet of the dryer and an air plenum temperature sensor (see diagram). The DM510 also comes with a printer to print out summary drying information, and a calibration push button to make moisture sensor calibration a snap.
The DM510 control panel is the heart of the system. The panel LCD display shows inlet and outlet grain moisture and temperature readings as well as the air plenum temperature and the dryer discharge rate (metering roll speed). All of this information feeds into the Dryer Master computer as it continuously calculates the best discharge rate to use, based on the moisture of the grain in the dryer.
The DM510 panel interfaces with the dryer through the motor speed control. From the DM510 panel the dryer operator can choose to let the Dryer Master make discharge rate decisions automatically in AUTOMATIC mode, or choose to set the discharge rate themselves in MANUAL mode.
There are two big challenges when drying grain outdoors. First, drying conditions can change dramatically during the day (e.g. humidity, wind speed and direction, and temperature). Second, the moisture going into the dryer can also vary quite significantly. Trying to dry to a consistent target is definitely not an easy job. This is especially true during the busy periods when other tasks may take your attention away from the dryer.
The way the DM510 works may seem simple, but it is also very powerful. The DM510 is always watching the moisture of the grain going into and coming out of the dryer - to keep a complete picture of what is in the dryer at all times. This allows it to make adjustments to the discharge rate when either wetter or drier grain is loaded into the dryer. It does not have to wait to see over or under dried grain leaving the dryer before it adjusts the discharge rate.
But that is not all. The DM510 builds a unique drying model for your dryer and updates it continuously as drying conditions change. Because it knows what is going into the dryer, it can use its model to predict what should come out. If the results differ, it automatically updates its model. So, by combining real time moisture information, the drying model, and the computing power in the panel, the DM510 can figure out the very best way to dry the mix of different moistures that are in your dryer at any one time.
Finally, the DM510 is only doing one thing - watching your drying. It does not have to unload trucks, or answer phones, or anything else. The DM510 stays focused on your dryer 100% of the time.
We all know that it is impossible to dry every kernel of grain to a single target moisture, and that is not what the DM510 tries to do. Instead the DM510 tries to dry as much of the grain as close to target as possible. Some grain will obviously come out above target, and some below target, but when you average everything out over a longer run, you will find the average moisture coming out will be very close to target.
For example, if you are drying corn with a target of 15.5%, and you have most of the corn coming out of the dryer between 15.0% and 16.0% (and averaging 15.5%), you know that once it goes into the bin it will eventually temper to have a 15.5% average moisture, just as you wanted.
Our customers tell us that they see real benefits with a DM510. First there are the benefits from reduced overdrying which include less shrinkage, reduced energy costs, and greater dryer throughput. Then there is the peace of mind that comes from knowing their drying is being watched over 100% of the time, and that they always have a printed record of what has happened. Interestingly a number of our customers have told us that the moment they really discovered the financial value of the DM510 was when they went to ship from their bins and saw how close to the moisture target the grain was.
