- Pongamia (Karanj) Seed Cakes

Pongamia (karanj) seed cake (the material that is left after pressing the oil) is exellent high protein feed for livestock.

The following are the findings from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in a FAO Study in 2012 titled:

'Biofuel co-products as livestock feed - Opportunities and challenges'

Protein-rich feeds are one of the costliest feed ingredients in animal diets. Poor dietary supply of proteins results in low rates of reproduction and production, as well as increased susceptibility of livestock to metabolic disorders and infectious diseases.

The strategy for improving livestock production has therefor been to maximize the efficiency of utilization of the available feed resources in the rumen by providing optimum conditions for microbial growth and by supplementation with protein-rich feeds like oil seed cakes, thus optimizing the ratio of energy-to-protein.

Animal nutritionists constantly seek cheaper, easily available, non-competitive (with human food), unconventional agro-forestal and industrial co-products for feeding to ruminants.

Pongamia (Karanj) seed cakes is rich in protein. The crude protein content of rotary-pressed karanj cake ranges from 6% to 24%, while it varies from 22.0% to 28.7% in expeller-pressed karanj cake and 30.0% to 34.0% in solvent-extracted karanj cake.

Water-washed or de-oiled karanj cakes may be incorporated at up to 50% of the nitrogen moiety of conventional protein supplements like soybean meal or groundnut cake without any adverse effect on nutrient metabolism, growth or health of animals.
