Our SPS-controlled MicroCrosss® systems work fully automatically and convince by their simple and safe operation. No filter aids are required for this process – this saves costs and protects the envi-ronment. By backwashing and cleaning, the initial performance can be achieved again and again. In ultrafiltration, e.g. in the biopharmaceutical industry (e.g. concentration, fractionation of enzymes and vaccines or diafiltration) or environmental technology (sewage treatment) both hollow fibre and spiral wound modules are used.

The MicroCross® system is available in various automation stages; in the automated versions, the operation is performed by a programmable logic controller from Siemens:
- fully automatic for the 24-hour operation with automated washing and cleaning intervals for large outputs
- available from 6 modules and more
- semi-automatic by manual selection of the individual process steps (which then are executed automatically)
- available from 4 modules and more
- manual for small filtration outputs for unattended operation, however, with valves to be ac-tuated manually.

High pressure version, also for the filtration of sparkling wine or carbonated wines, is possible, of course. The filtration is performed here at the pressurization level of the sparkling wine tank.
Crossflow Technology
The Crossflow filtration is a cross-flow filtration process and is also called tangential flow filtration. Thereby, the medium to be filtered is forced with pressure through exactly defined pores of a mem-brane. A high overflow velocity in the module, however, prevents the clogging of the pores by keeping the solids suspended. The size of the pores decides whether a micro or ultra filtration is present. During the filtration process, the concentration of the retained solids increases within the system which can lead for different membrane types to a clogging resp. blocking of the membrane. Blocking or clogging also arises by the formation of a gel layer (colloids). For the filtration of wine, fruit juice or vinegar for example, an especially for this purpose developed hollow fibre module made of polyethersulphone has proved itself.
Filtration cycleA centrifugal pump is responsible for a constant through-flow in a cycle through the hollow fibres and generates the required filtration pressure within the hollow fibres. Unfiltrate is automatically fed into the cycle, according to the outflow, whereby also a small amount of retentate is continuously transferred out of the cycle and fed back to the feed container. Thus, the proportion of the solids in the feed container becomes more and more concentrated. By continuous backwashing of the hollow fibre modules, the filtration performance is kept constant.
