However, every farmer is faced with the issue of how to put this into everyday practice, despite a busy work schedule. Nutri Clean AL is a dedicated cleaner specifically developed to satisfy the demanding needs of washing automated feeding systems automatically. Even difficult protein or fatty residues, including milk stone, cannot resist the dissolving force of Nutri Clean AL.

The concentration needed allows low dosage and thereby reduces the pressure on both the environment and your purse.

Recommended dosage with H&L 100:

Dosage for other applications (e.g., in milking systems):

  • Let a 0.5 – 1 % solution circulate for approx. 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Pre-rinse and post-rinse with clear water.

How do I set up my barn for the installation of an automatic calf feeder?

When choosing an automatic feeder, be sure to opt for a unit that gives you as much flexibility as possible. With such a product, you can be certain that you will not have to settle for second best when you install and operate the system.

There are a few other things you should be aware of:

  • Ensure a reliable and appropriate mains power supply.
  • Use drinking water of good quality.
  • Maintain a clean environment around the feeder stall. This is the area most visited by the calves; it may get dirty very quickly. Therefore:
    • install the feeder stall on a base raised about 15 cm (6 inches) above pen floor level;
    • prepare a liquid drain (slope and manure gutter) below or behind the stall;
    • position the stall outside the main area of the pen;
    • clean or muck this area out regularly.
  • When you plan the design, be sure to allow enough space around the automatic feeder and stalls. This will tremendously facilitate routine tasks later on, such as pouring milk replacer into the hopper, replacing worn teats and tubing, and performing the yearly preventative system maintenance. Space for two palettes is suggested as a replacer storage area, and the installation of a lockable cabinet for drugs etc. is also recommended.
  • It is advisable that from the position of the feeder, all calves in the group are visible. This gives you the opportunity to visually check the information found in the data lists against the calves themselves.
  • As far as possible, use buried conduits to route wiring as well as the tubing to the teats. To avoid rodent intrusion, make sure that the butts of the conduits are sealed.
  • Although the automatic feeder is equipped with an antifreeze function, it is advisable to route the tubing to the teats through an insulating hose. Furthermore, make sure that the water supply line to the automatic feeder is frost-proof.
  • An entrance gate to the pen next to the feeder stall will tremendously facilitate your daily routines. It allows you easily into the pen when you are looking after the calves and it is useful when you teach them how to use the system.
  • Do not neglect future extensions of your feeding system. Prepare for the easy installation of additional feeder stalls by allowing for the space, a raised base, and the conduits that will be required.

Metabolic Programming

Scientific findings have shown that the first weeks in the life of a calf lay the foundations of its further development. Factors suchs as health, performance, and time in the operation before culling are heavily influenced by the nutrition the young calf is treated to. The more energy is available to the calf at this stage, the better its performance later in life will be.

But how will I give my calves a perfect start into life?

Feeding: Beestings at Birth

As the potential for immunoglobulin intake decreases rapidly in the new-born calf, colostrum should be made available to it within the first hour after birth. A high quality of the beestings is a decisive factor for laying the foundations of good immuno-defences. When deep-frozen colostrum is used, gentle heating has to be ensured. However, quantity, too, has an impact: 4 litres (1 gal.) are sufficient to give the calf enough protection by the valuable ingredients.

Feeding: Whole Milk/Powdered Milk Replacer

To be able to leverage all existing potentials, it is possible to offer milk ad libitum from the start. Whether this is whole milk or milk diet based on milk replacer is a matter of personal preference. Acidifiers allow extending the period of time whole milk can be stored. If replacer powder is used, only CMRs of high quality made from skimmed milk should be selected.

But how can you implement a performance-focused feeding programme with an automatic feeder?

The H&L 100 enables individual feeding of every single calf, to cater for its needs. Feeding supportive of metabolic programming (see the chart) can thus be achieved easily and even results in labour savings. A variable setting for the milk replacer concentration in the diet enables the adaptation of the feeding programme to the calf's age: 160 g/l in the first weeks of the programme, then gradual reduction to 120 g/l. In this manner, you offer the calves the energy they need during the stage in which they need it, and after it you save money on feeding cost. For weaning, too, is at the hands of the H&L 100, automatically and particularly gently.

What's Left for Me to Do When My Automatic System Feeds My Calves?

Plenty!! The automation only takes care of feeding your calves. You are still responsible for monitoring your calves' development, for identifying and treating sick ones. Monitoring is becoming increasingly important.

Consider what follows as a few suggestions for daily work in the barn:

  • Check twice a day that the automatic feeder and the calves are fine. The automatic feeder gives you the freedom to do this any time you choose.
  • Most of the time, the calves lie and rest. Therefore, walk among the calves and pay close attention. Make every calf stand up and, when it does, check for uncommon breathing sounds and the condition of the calves' excretions.
  • Checking the automatic feeder includes the following:
    • Is the milk replacer powder or the whole milk supply sufficient for the next 24 hours?
    • Does the mixing procedure run as intended?
    • Are there any error messages?
    • Is the outcome of the automatic wash cycle satisfactory?
    • Are there any teats that should be replaced?
