Phoenix Controls offers solutions for all critical airflow applications whether it’s research in wet chemistry laboratories, the multi-discipline environments of Life Sciences, or the wide-range of healthcare spaces requiring proper directional airflow. While these markets and applications may differ, they all share the requirement of maintaining proper pressurization of spaces.
Phoenix Controls has over twenty years of experience providing these solutions and does so by incorporating the patented Accel® II venturi valve in different control platforms. The valve has two methods of maintaining accuracy: flow metering and pressure independence.
Flow MeteringFirst, when used in VAV applications it can actuate to new setpoints based on a controller command. But unlike a terminal box, it does not attempt to measure airflow. Rather, it relies on an airflow characterization curve generated on our NVLAP Accredited (a program administered by NIST) Lab Code 200992-0 accredited air stations, and downloaded to the specific valve controller at our factory prior to shipment. Once installed, it already knows where to go to achieve any specific flow within its flow range.
Having accurate airflow is critical, but trying to measure it and then react by modulating a damper blade in the ductwork with dynamically changing duct pressures is difficult at best.
At Phoenix we also measure airflow, but we do so in a controlled environment, on our air stations at the factory to create the valve characterizations.
Pressure IndependenceOnce an airflow control device is installed in the ductwork, it will need to respond to constant changes in duct static pressure.
A terminal box does this by continuously by measuring the velocity pressure and then reacting by commanding the actuator to a new position to maintain flow. The terminal box requires long, straight runs of ductwork before and after, for the transducer, or measuring device to produce accurate airflow measurements. The result of this is additional expense and complexity.
The Phoenix Controls Accel II venturi valve adjusts and compensates for fluctuations of duct pressure by using a mechanical pressure-independent cone and spring assembly that moves in and out of the venturi orifice, increasing and decreasing the airflow in a very predictable manner when exposed to pressure drops within a specified range. It’s this pressure independent cone assembly that dictates what minimum static pressures are required to operate properly.
Pressure RangesFor designs using our medium pressure venturi valves, the static pressure requirements are from .6” W.C. on the low end, to 3.0” W.C. on the high. While in that range the valve will provide consistent, accurate turndowns of 20-1 with ±5% accuracy of the commanded value. We also offer a low pressure valve designed to operate from .3” W.C. to 3.0” W.C. These low pressure valves come in the same sizes and configurations as the medium pressure valves, and offer the same key features and benefits albeit with derated flow ranges. (See chart below)
Shut-off ValvesPhoenix Controls also offers a line of valves that can go to full shut-off when isolation from the HVAC system is required. The shut-off valves are available in two valve designs: standard shut-off and low leakage shut-off. While they both operate in the same manner, their leakage specifications differ. (see Shut-off PDS)
During normal operation, they both provide the same critical airflow control performance as found with the standard Accel II venturi valve. In the shut-off mode, they provide low leakage isolation between the HVAC system and the room.
Regardless of style or type, the Phoenix Controls Accel II venturi valves do not require any sensors, lubrication or “tweaking” of any kind, and will provide many years of solid, maintenance-free service. Additionally, Phoenix valves are accurate across their entire flow range and depending on the type of actuation selected, they can move to the desired flow in less than one second.
