About Us
Nordevco is the parent company of:
BactiDomus® BioTechnology: Nordevco Associates Ltd’s BactiDomus® Technology provides the municipal and agricultural sectors cost-effective, sustainable solutions that can be implemented quickly and without specialized equipment, disruption to normal operations or risk of damage to existing infrastructure.
The BactiDomus® Technology also provides solutions for accelerating the composting process and the reduction and remediation of industrial organic wastes in a cost effective manner usually within the existing infrastructure and process flow.
What We Do
Nordevco’s BactiDomus® BioTechnology combines the strengths and benefits of fixed film systems into one easy to use delivery system:
- Simplicity of use, the technology can be applied within the existing confines of the system being treated;
- Reduced energy requirement;
- Elimination of bulking;
- Improved process stability;
- Resistance to and faster recovery from hydraulic and organic surges;
- Ability to increase the effective mixed liquor suspended solids to treat increased flows;
- Attached growth process improves retention of nitrifiers and denitrifiers, producing less organic sludge.
Nordevco’s BactiDomus® BioTechnology was developed by a diversified group of research scientists working together at Universities in Belgium and France. Their goal was to create a mechanism with the flexibility to delivery biological solutions to a range of environmental issues more effectively and efficiently.
The foundation for the success of the BactiDomus® BioTechnology was the development team’s clear understanding that for any carrier material to be successful it had to meet specific underlying needs of the organisms:
- Regardless of the organisms used, they would be cultured in a sterile laboratory and would require time to acclimate to the environment they were activated in.
- Microorganisms, like humans, do not exist or thrive in isolation of each other but rather rely on others for stimulation and competition;
- Organisms prefer to grow and live in colonies or flocs and prefer to attach to something to anchor these colonies;
- Individual species of microorganisms do not work in isolation to break down organic compounds. To successfully break down any organic completely to CO2 and H20, a variety of different organisms are require.
BactiDomus Technology
The result of that collaborative research work is the BactiDomus Technology which is based on the use of an inorganic limestone-like porous carrier material. The porosity of the material allows it to be bathed in a nutrient broth, absorbing key micro-nutrients that act as an initial food source when the product is activated. It is then impregnated with a range of different naturally occurring and non-pathogenic organisms, selected for their ability to breakdown specific organic contaminants.
The organisms selected for inclusion are chosen based on the understanding that each contaminated environment can be aerobic, anaerobic or facultative anaerobic. Therefore, aerobic, facultative anaerobic and anaerobic organisms are selected and used in each product to ensure that they can function successfully in a broad range of environments.
The carrier material’s large surface area to size ratio provides the organisms with both internal and external floc points where they grow and create large effective colonies of biodegraders working together to break down the organic contaminant into carbon dioxide and water.
The carrier material’s hydrophilic nature allows it to absorb both the water and contamination. This provides a continuous strong contact between the imbedded organisms and organic contaminant. This ensures that the organisms have a continuous food source as they grow and create flocs within the protective confines of the capillary network of the carrier material.
What the development of the BactiDomus Technology did was create a very efficient and flexible mechanism for applying solutions to existing environmental problems. It was the creation of a system that bears a striking resemblance to what is commonly referred to as Fixed Film or Attached Growth systems that are commonly used in sewage treatment.
Today Fixed Film treatment systems have evolved into two major types:
- Fixed in place systems that generally employ a PVC structured sheet or fabric web design; and
- Dispersed type systems that use polypropylene finned cylinders or sponges.
Nordevco’s BactiDomus Technology carrier material combines the strengths and advantages of both of these systems – simplicity of installation, reduced energy requirement, elimination of bulking, improved process stability, resistance to and faster recovery from hydraulic and organic surges, ability to increase the effective mixed liquor suspended solids to treat increased flows, attached growth process improves retention of nitrifiers and denitrifiers, and produces less sludge.
At the same time the Nordevco technology is less susceptible to the two major drawbacks associated with this technology. Given its dispersed nature and finer granule size it is less likely to foul and clog with inorganic material and it is also less likely to foul aeration and screening devices, especially where the very fine grained version of the product is used. It is also not as susceptible to biomass erosion due to vigorous aeration as dispersed media is. This is a result of both the existence of capillaries within the carrier to shelter the developed biomass and its coarse surface which provides better adherence for the biofilm.
Biofilm carriers rely on the existence of a diversity of naturally occurring organisms in the system to generate the biofilm. As the film forms it creates specific microenvironments on the carriers that allow the film to develop under adequate conditions to ensure the efficient processing of the waste.
Nordevco’s BactiDomus Technology is seeded with a diverse population of microorganisms and the initial pre-requirements to ensure the formation of a healthy biofilm on the carrier material. The end result is the development of a high density and highly diverse microbial population that achieves high rates of biodegradation within the system.
The BactiDomus Technology is much easier and more cost effective to implement within existing systems and is less costly to maintain. Depending on the existing system and the problems being encountered, the application of the product can be directed to where it will provide the most benefit. It can also be applied directly within the existing system without any capital expense or infrastructure modifications.
