Forest Management Services

The key aim of the Forest Management Plan (FMP) is to ensure the forestlands on the reservation are managed in an environmentally sensitive, sustainable, and economically viable manner.  In addition, the FMP is aimed to ensure that planning is a continuing process, responsive to changing community expectations and expanding knowledge of the forest ecosystem.  To achieve this aim, this FMP proposes the use and management of forestland that will be in harmony and balance with the conservation of natural, aesthetic, and cultural values across the entire reservation.

EES prepared Forest Management Plans and Environmental Assessments for the following Indian Reservations:

  • Fort Peck, Montana
  • Fort Berthold, North Dakota
  • Standing Rock, North Dakota
  • Cheyenne River, South Dakota
  • Sisseton, South and North Dakota
  • Yankton, South Dakota
  • Crow Creek, South Dakota
  • Santee Sioux, Nebraska
  • Winnebago, Nebraska
  • Pine Ridge, South Dakota
  • Rosebud, South Dakota
  • Six Reservations in Michigan (Bay Mills, Little Traverse, Grand Traverse, Huron Potawatomi, LacVieux Desert, and Little River Band;
  • Red Lake, Minnesota;
  • Concho, Oklahoma; and
  • Alabama Coushatta, Texas
  • White Earth, Minnesota

Extensive coordination with the Tribal Councils, Tribal Agencies and Tribal members was accomplished. The FMPs were prepared to provide management guidelines for good stewardship of the forestry resources at each of the Reservations. EES identified management goals for each reservation to avoid the degradation of natural and cultural resources. The FMPs included the following main components: forest description; protection of natural resources; natural resource damage assessment (to forestry, cultural resources, and other significant resources to the Tribe); forestland management; and social and economic benefits assessments. The EAs were prepared to identify and evaluate potential impacts to intensive harvest management of the Reservations’ mostly ponderosa pine timber. A 45-day public review of both the FMP and the EA was held for all of the Reservations.
