Oververde staff have a strong background in the use of composting to sterilise and reduce the volumes of organic wastes and have been published in an international developement magazine in relation to novel composting technologies. They have previously been involved with the design of in-vessel composting equipment and process facility design with annual through puts of up to 30.000 m3. As a company our particular interests, apart from improving traditional in-vessel composting systems for food and green waste, include the use of composting technologies to provide innovative, cost effective solutions for the remediation of contaminated soils and the volume reduction of contaminant organic materials.
Remediation is the action of reducing, isolating or removing a contaminant in an environment where it may cause harm to people, wildlife or the wider environment.
The techniques employed to remediate contaminated soils include physio-chemical techniques (such as air stripping, reagent addition and thermal desorption) and biological remediation techniques including windrowing, phyto remediation, land farming and biostimulation).
The physio-chemical treatments are generally very expensive and the biological treatments take a lot of time and space to carry out and are poor for containment of air bourne contaminants. In-vessel composting can supply a relatively quick process time whilst still remaining cost effective and the equipment can be designed to contain the contaminated process and direct it through a bio-filtration unit. Another advantage of in-vessel composting is that the initial rapid build up of biological activity can create a build up of heat which in turn can drive the release of VOCs and gaseous contaminants. The negative pressure within the IVC allows for the process air and gaseous contaminants in the vessel to be contained and transfered through a bio-filtration/activated carbon filter system.
Many organic chemicals can be treated using IVC technology, although some are toxic to the composting microbes, in higher concentrations. In-vessel composting technology can potentially be used to treat a wide range of soil contamination including the treatment of hydrocarbons including fuel oils, explosives, VOCs, PAHs, PCPs and organic waste residues and sludges.
We can supply the treatment technology for general composting or novel remediation projects or we can work with partners to determine whether their projects would benefit from using IVC technology. We have small units to that can be used on compostability trials and 'recipe' design to determine whether or nor in-vessel composting would be a viable treatment option for your project.
