Innovative Breeding Services
Troutlodge is the first salmon and trout production company to: Develop trout strains to naturally produce trout eggs every week of the year. Sell over 500 million trout eggs in over 70 countries worldwide. Apply both traditional and molecular genetics to vastly improve the economic performance of our trout strains. . Apply genomic techniques to produce bacterial cold water disease resistant strain of trout that are commercially available.. Develop all-female trout populations and sell all-female eggs with uniform and high growth rates. Develop all-female eggs produced naturally and which were needed for special markets.
Our goal as a breeding company is to help our clients succeed and maintain profitability; efficiency is the key to success. Our customers invest considerable time, care and effort and in trout to grow them to harvest size. That is why it’s important to begin with the best eggs possible and efficiently grow them to achieve the most return out of each animal at harvest. Flesh quality, external appearance and product uniformity all contribute to profitability at harvest. At Troutlodge, we are placing increased effort to improve harvest characteristics through genetic selections for improved yield.
The primary edible portion of most fish is simply the fillet. Our breeding program incorporates selection for not only fish that produce high fillet yield, but also reduced visceral percentage. Troutlodge’s goal is to produce eggs that result in trout that are highly efficient in utilizing feed to produce quality fillets rather than viscera. In turn, this will make for a more efficient, productive and profitable operation.
We take a collaborative approach to develop innovative products. Troutlodge geneticists and other scientists often work with University professors, government agencies and our customers to develop and test products for a demanding and competitive market.
New products, such as trout with enhanced disease resistance, can take several generations to evaluate prior to launch. Before you see a product on the price list, Troutlodge has typically invested years of research effort and resources.
Industry leading disease resistance
All eggs shipped from Troutlodge are certified disease-free through an extensive, independent process that meets and exceeds OIE standards. Because of our global customer base, it is subject to a wide variety of health certification requirements, and so it has developed a comprehensive testing program that is unparalleled in the industry.
As part of our Fish Health Management Program, each group of fish is tested twice a year. All sampling is conducted by an independent veterinarian, accredited by the United States Department of Agriculture - Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA/APHIS). Collected samples are then shipped to the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) at the Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine for analysis. Testing protocols of both the OIE Diagnostic Manual and the Fish Health Blue Book of the American Fisheries Society are utilized for pathogen analysis. WADDL is approved by the USDA for aquatic animal health testing.

Cutting edge genomic selection
Troutlodge and Hendrix Genetics deploy the latest techniques when it comes to genomic selection. Through this process we are able to identify specific markers in the DNA of certin animals so we can accuratly breed and improve for qualities such as
- feed conversion rate
- meat characteristics
- animal welfare
