Policy Development and Advocacy
For over 30 years, Ecocity Builders founder Richard Register has been involved in helping reshape cities through pioneering policies and ordinances that encourage the types of development in balance with the bioregion and supporting natural resources.
In Berkeley, we have had success passing policies that are currently in force, including the Ecocity Amendment to the 2001 General Plan, the Solar Greenhouse Ordinance, and the Residential Energy Conservation Ordinance (RECO).
We believe in citizen involvement in governance and educate ourselves and others on land use and architectural issues. Regularly, we provide policy guidance to cities by serving on task forces and committees, as well as input and recommendations for local community planning and development initiatives.
Ecocity Builders is a member of TransFORM, a Bay Area coalition working to create world-class public transportation and walkable communities in the Bay Area and beyond. We are also Board members of ICED, the International Council on Ecopolis Development.
