Chafer Stream Bars - Post Applying Liquid Nitrogen to Wheat To Boost Yield Potential - Video

Here is a short video which shows the Chafer Multi-Rate Stream Bars in action on a Case sprayer. They are seen streaming liquid N into a wheat canopy using 20' (1/2 M) bars.

We had good growing conditions early this spring (2013), which raised the yield potential above what we fertilized for early this spring. So on this farm, additional N was required to bridge the gap between what we applied and the new yield goal.

We pulled soil tests, but only found around 3-5 ppm of nitrate N in the top 6'. Within our region with 100-120 bu/ac field yield goals, we recommmend at least 10 ppm of nitrate N within the top 6' of soil (measured at feekes growth stage 7-8. If the soil N levels drop significantly below 10 ppm, theres a good chance for a significant yield response when applying additional N.

If using liquid N, this late spring application MUST BE MADE PRIOR TO FLAG LEAF EMERGENCE, as we can't risk damaging this important leaf with liquid N, even with stream bars.

Here we are applying 25 lb/ac of actual N through the Chafer stream bars, using 28% N and because it was applied before flag leaf emergence, minimal leaf scorch was observed.
