Application of Geosynthetic Clay Liner in irrigation channels, reservoir dams and landscape lakes
Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) is a composite anti-seepage material made of natural sodium-based bentonite sandwiched between two layers of geotextiles (or geomembranes). Its core component, bentonite, swells in water to form a dense gel layer, which can effectively prevent water penetration and has both the inherent properties of geotechnical materials and waterproof and anti-seepage properties.
Characteristics of Geosynthetic Clay Liner:
- It has good density and can form a high-density isolation film under water pressure;
- It has strong self-healing ability. If there are leaks or cracks, bentonite will swell with water to automatically fill the gaps;
- It is resistant to dry-wet cycles and freeze-thaw cycles. After continuous dry-wet alternation and freeze-thaw cycles, the permeability coefficient does not change significantly;
- The construction is simple and fast. The roll material design allows for fast laying and short construction period. Compared with other waterproof materials, Geosynthetic Clay Liner does not require heating and pasting;
- Bentonite is a natural and environmentally friendly material that is pollution-free and suitable for ecological engineering. It does not cause any harm to the human body or the environment;
- Long-term effectiveness: The service life can reach more than 50 years and it is resistant to freeze-thaw and chemical corrosion.
Working principle of Geosynthetic Clay Liner:
The montmorillonite mineral in bentonite expands to 10~15 times its original volume after absorbing water, forming an impermeable gel barrier with a permeability coefficient as low as 10?? cm/s, which is far higher than that of general anti-seepage membranes.
The main application scenarios of Geosynthetic Clay Liner:
- Water conservancy projects: reservoir dams, irrigation channels, artificial lakes.
- Environmental protection projects: anti-seepage at the bottom of landfills and sewage treatment pools.
- Construction projects: waterproofing of basements and tunnels.

GCL solution: As an anti-seepage layer of the dam body or dam foundation, it is used in combination with geomembrane to enhance impermeability (permeability coefficient ≤10?? cm/s).
Advantages: self-repairing cracks, anti-uneven settlement, and lifespan of up to 50 years.
Landscape lake/artificial lake anti-seepage problem: Traditional HDPE membrane is easy to break and has high maintenance cost.
GCL solution: directly laid on the bottom of the lake, natural bentonite is environmentally friendly and non-toxic, suitable for aquatic ecosystems.
Advantages: no need to weld seams, eco-friendly, landscape lakes can be used with vegetation planting layers.
