Today, the world rings with the slogan, ‘Go green!’ But, do you know that several centuries ago there were methods followed in the agriculture to avoid the dumping of garbage through the bundling of hay with a soft wire called bailing wire? In the 18 and 19 centuries, people used to bind bales of hay with farm wire and could mend fences with the same wire. Since it was totally manual, hay baling was strenuous and problematic in the beginning. Today, it has expanded its territories and is used in many industrial applications.

Issues with bailing wire

Manual bailing with bailing wire was not much successful, as it was not strong enough to contain the bale of hay and would budge at any time. The cattle and the sheep that ate this wire along with hay were definite to face severe injuries to their health. The tit bits of the bailing wire that got stuck in the machines of the grain mill were sure to burst all of a sudden. All these troubles came to a standstill, when the stationary balers came into existence.

The Evolution of hay baling

As we know, stationary balers were the first introductory application of machine in hay bailing. They were half manual and half driven by the machines. You know how? Horse powered units as these balers were, they needed the help of men to put the hay into the balers and tie the hay into bales. Yet, they minimized manual work by carrying the hay from a place to the other, of course when they were placed on wheels. The real machine work started with square balers, the automatic ones in tying the hay and bundling it into bales. The modern or otherwise known as the round balers substitute man completely in hay bailing-collecting the hay, bundling it, tying into bales and ejecting the bales out of the machine. So wonderful is man’s mind that he makes machines his servants to do whatever he wants from them.

Multiple uses of bale wire

Used as an all purpose fix anything material, bailing wire is utilized at random for different usages like fencing, keeping the muffler tight, affixing the broken parts of a tractor and any other home repairs. It became so due to the make do fashion of life during a depression period. People managed with whatever was on hand and bale wire was a great rescue for them in mending the repairs. That is why; you find the saying about ‘baling wire’ and spit to fix anything. Well, bale twine has replaced haywires and they are more in use for the cause of their strength and durability. Still, people prefer bale wire for small scales of hay baling and other farming activities.

Not just the agricultural front has utilized the baling wire for binding purposes, other industrial areas like cardboards, aluminum and textiles benefit from using bale twines and wires for condensing and strapping. Sure to say that this is much useful in recycling industry.

Do we not feel that God has created many worthy things for man to use and man in turn has created many more uses of them for his benefits and advantages? Bailing wire is one such, which has undergone tremendous improvements to be the best ad hoc for binding needs.
