INTRODUCTION
Feed is a key factor in the success of fish farming. You need to ensure that the feed you use is appropriate for your farm, regardless of whether you are using local or foreign fish feeds.

Like I always say to my clients, the choice of feed that you use for your fish depends on several factors.

This article will discuss the different types of catfish feeds you can purchase and use.

Nigerian Fish Types
i. Dry Fish Food

Dry fish food is the first type of fish feed. This is the most popular type of fish food in Nigeria. They are artificially manufactured from nutrients and fibre concentrate.

This feed is most popular in areas that have saltwater and tropical fishes. These feeds don't sink into the water and they last longer on the shelf, without losing quality.

ii. Vacation Fish Food

Next is the vacation fish foods, also known as food blocks or weekends blocks.

This feed is best if it is given to fish in tropical regions where the farmer is not available during the feeding.

When this feed is thrown into a pond, it dissolves and sinks to the bottom.

It is important to not overestimate how much feed is being thrown into the water. The more feed that is not consumed, the greater the risk of the pond becoming polluted. This could eventually cause the death of fish.

iii. Medicated Fish Food

Meditated fish feed, as the name suggests, is a type fish feed that has been given medication to the fish.

You can give medicine to your fish if you find any unusual behavior. Even though every advantage comes with a drawback, the benefits of this feed for your fish far outweigh the disadvantages.

iv. Freeze-Dried And Frozen Fish Feed

These fish feeds are ideal for marine and tropical fish. These feeds are made with natural ingredients.

For making freeze-dried fish food, the ingredients are tubifexworm, bloodworms, and mosquito larvae. You can also add water fleas or brine shrimp to the ingredient.

The frozen fish feed is a different type of fish feed. It is fresh and perishable. It is processed in no way and can be sold as a resellable packet, unlike the freeze-dried fish food.

These feeds can be made from the same ingredients as freeze-dried feeds, but may also include bloodworm or daphnia.

Availability

Before you choose your favorite fish feed brand, the first thing to look at is its availability in the market. It is not a good idea to buy a product that, after your fish have exhausted it, is no longer in stock.

Some of the feed brands listed above may not be available depending on where you live. Skretting, Coppens or any other brand should be researched before you make a decision. Also, ensure that it is easy for your fish to purchase another set if they have exhausted the first set.

The price is another important factor to consider when selecting a fish feed brand. Before you decide on a brand, consider your budget and how much money you can spend on the feed.

For instance, just because I have enough money to buy Skretting throughout my production cycle does not mean that you have the same amount.

Before you kickstart, plan your expenses and ensure that the funds are sufficient to cover the project.

Quality

You should also consider the quality of the feed. The feeds we have mentioned are high-quality, but this doesn't necessarily mean that they are free from any adulteration.

Make sure to research the quality and protein levels of any feed before you buy it.

If you're looking to purchase large quantities of feed, and can locate the manufacturer's facility, you should go there. If they don’t sell, they will refer you to their distributor, where you will get the original feed.
