Lake Pend Oreille’s noxious weed problem has worsened over the past six years, as blooms of invasive Butomus umbellatus, or flowering rush, have joined Eurasian milfoil to clog area waterways. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers enacted targeted herbicide treatments at portions of waterways to control most of the flowering rush.

According to the Corps, the densely packed flowering rush can “degrade water quality (including impacts on irrigation and

Following reports of hundreds of dead fish floating in Bayou Rouge in Cottonport, Louisiana, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) conducted an investigation to find out what caused the fish kill.

Officials determined that that fish died from a low dissolved oxygen level in the water, basically suffocating the fish.

The low dissolved oxygen level was a result of multiple factors. Days before the fish kill, LDWF treated Bayou Rouge with a herbicide th

In a study recently published in the journal, “Aquatic Toxicology,” researchers found that while concentrations of the herbicide fluridone similar to those used when it’s applied to lakes to control Eurasian watermilfoil and hydrilla can have major impacts on fish reproduction.

A research team with the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, exposed fathead minnows to concentrations of fluridone that would be found in a lake

Weeds on the Ross River have a new predator in town as Council launches its brand new 6.5 tonne weed harvester to combat invasive species in the waterway.

The aquatic weed harvester arrived in Townsville, Queensland, Australia from Aquarius Systems in the United States to replace Council’s older retiring harvester. The new model includes stainless steel fittings, a quieter engine, and the capacity to complete in one hour what the old harvester could do in one day.

In a move not seen for almost 40 years, the Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday issued an emergency order suspending all uses of a weedkiller linked to serious health risks for unborn babies.

The herbicide dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate, also known as DCPA or Dacthal, is used on crops such

Chautauqua Lake Association in New York performed a study focused on weed harvesting.

People believe that the harvesting operation loses a lot of plant material and critics of mechanical harvesting say crews don’t collect enough of the plant material that they cut, leaving behind floaters.

After operating the weed harvester, reliable data collected shows that the harvesters leave less than 1% of the loose debris behind.

If you drove past Elk Lake in Hoffman, Minnesota this past summer, you may have seen an unusual sight: A mechanical harvester out on the water cutting and removing aquatic vegetation.

This is the first time the city has hired a mechanical harvester, but they were dealing with a bumper crop of lakes weeds.  A warm spring, low lake levels, and the effects of zebra mussels created conditions where aquatic plants thrived.

The city has funded an herbicide in previous ye

Heron Lake in far southwestern Minnesota was once considered one of North America’s most productive waterfowl lakes and in an effort return the lake into a productive waterfowl rest stop, the DNR has once again revamped their management plant.

The DNR will systematically be adding predatory fish to sharpen the attack against the destructive carp, bullheads and fathead minnows that overpopulate the lake.  The quick-to-multiply rough fish have stirred up the bottom and wiped

Congratulations are in order to Buffalo Lake Protection & Rehabilitation District! Our customer recently mentioned they removed 1300 loads of weeds so far this year with their fleet of Aquarius equipment.

Buffalo Lake is actually a flowage consisting of 2500 acres and is very shallow with a maximum depth of 8 feet. The shallow waters along with a mostly muck bottom create the perfect setting for aquatic plant growth. And, when Wisconsin lakes have a bad weed year, Buffalo Lake has

At 8.4 square miles, Candlewood Lake in Western Connecticut is the largest lake in the state. It is a popular year-round tourist destination, and the area is home to many second homes of New York City residents.

The lake has an ongoing problem with the growth of eelgrass and Eurasian milfoil in the shallower areas.  Various methods have been deployed to manage the aquatic such as drawdowns, mechanical harvesters, and both chemical and biological methods; such as weevils an
