Seasoned logs are harvested wood with the moisture content reduced to 20% in order to increase their combustion potential. In order to make sure that the reduced moisture content is preserved, storage needs to be in a covered ventilated area. Seasoned logs can be of hardwood or softwood but the heat output of hardwood by volume is roughly twice that of softwood.

Miscanthus is commonly known as Elephant Grass and is a highly calorific energy crop, similar to that of wood. It is better burned in the form of a brickette or pellet due to better handling. It is easy to grow, even on land that has no other use, and produces a crop every year without the need for replanting.
