GreenLight Biosciences - Calantha

Calantha is an innovative bio-insecticide designed to target the Colorado potato beetle, a pest responsible for significant crop damage in the nightshade family. Utilizing RNA technology, Calantha offers a highly precise and environmentally-friendly solution that requires minimal application rates – just 9.9 grams per hectare. This translates to less than one-tenth the rate of conventional chemicals. The treatment is mixed with water and applied using standard agricultural equipment. When ingested by the beetles, the dsRNA disrupts their biology, causing them to cease feeding and succumb to their own toxins. Extensive field trials over four years validate its effectiveness. Importantly, Calantha is designed to be species-specific and poses no risk to beneficial insects like honeybees and butterflies, nor to mammals, even at application rates 100 times higher than recommended. Additionally, it degrades into harmless, natural nucleotides within three days, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Calantha integrates seamlessly into growers' existing pest management programs, tackling all beetle life stages but is particularly effective against young larvae.

The parasitic Varroa destructor mite, which many beekeepers consider to be the top threat to honeybees, reproduces in hives, feeds on honeybees, and spreads disease, destroying colonies across the globe. Having acquired the rights to Bayer’s RNA intellectual property portfolio for bee health, we are developing our RNA-based syrup that targets reproductive Varroa mites, degrades in soil and water, is easy to use, and adds another tool for beekeepers looking for more options.
