HydroMentia - Compost for Aquatic Plant Systems

Compost produced from managed aquatic plant systems have proved to be a valuable commodity. Studies conducted by the University of Florida have found that the demand for organic compost far exceeds the potential production of compost generated by commercial scale managed aquatic plant systems. Recent research shows that compost users are willing to pay up to $32 per ton of quality compost. The chart below shows typical compost production of a 25 mgd Algal Turf Scrubber facility as it relates to the potential compost market in Florida.

HydroMentia - Livestock Feed

Livestock feed is another effective end-use of harvested biomass produced in larger Algal Turf Scrubber facilities, particularly in on-farm applications. Dried algal biomass tends to be higher in protein than alfalfa, often over 25% on a dry weight basis. A dried feed product would offer the benefit of long-term storage capability and a nationwide market. Studies by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) and the University of Florida School of Veterinary Medicine have been conducted to confirm the product’s value as a feed ingredient. With a typical 25 mgd Algal Turf Scrubber® system producing approximately 200 dry tons of high quality livestock feed per year, the massive feed commodities market could easily accept all of the feed produced.
