There are thousands of chemicals available for commercial use in the United States. While these chemicals and their physical properties may be registered and approved for certain applications, very few of them have environmental toxicity thresholds established. This can become problematic if chemicals of unknown effect are inadvertently released into the environment; in these cases, toxicity data are required in order to establish `safe` clean-up concentrations.
