Black Soldier Flies (Hermetia illucens) are found mostly in tropical/subtropical Western Hemisphere and Australia, however their range has expanded in part due to climate change and they are now considered native to in Canada and Northern Europe. In the wild they live in harsh environments, such as manure and compost, populated by bacteria and fungi. The response to these environments is one of nature’s most powerful immune systems. To date the Black Soldier Fly has been found to express over 150 anti-microbial peptides against a range of bacteria including E. coli, salmonella and staph bacteria. In addition, at specific stages of growth, the larvae contain high levels of lauric acid and chitin, both know to offer protective qualities. Oreka has invested over 5 years in primary and applied research to learn how to harness the power of this insect and deliver that value to help make farmers more productive and the food system more sustainable.
