  • Abutilon 'Bartley Schwarz' (Bartley Schwarz Flowering Maple)

Abutilon 'Bartley Schwarz' (Bartley Schwarz Flowering Maple)

In our winter hardiness trials, Abutilon 'Bartley Schwarz' (named after the late California plantsman, although incorrectly spelled 'Schwartz') has been one of our best performers. The slightly pendent branching habit of this Abutilon megapotamicum hybrid makes a 4' tall x 4' wide clump clothed with small, fuzzy green serrated leaves and adorned from early summer through fall with 1.5' wide, salmon-orange (RHS 24B) bell-shaped flowers that dangle from...

  • Baptisia Australis (Wild Blue Redneck Lupine)

Baptisia Australis (Wild Blue Redneck Lupine)

Baptisia australis is an easy-to-grow, drought-tolerant, deer-resistant North American native that is always a perennial favorite (pardon the pun) for the border or the wild garden. This native has upright stems clothed with peanut-like, trifoliate (three-lobed), blue-green, waxy foliage on a clump that can easily cover an area 3' wide. In early spring before the clump bulks up, the awesome blue lupine-like flower racemes are held atop the foliage....

  • Calanthe Discolor (Discolor Hardy Calanthe Orchid)

Calanthe Discolor (Discolor Hardy Calanthe Orchid)

Calanthe discolor is a Japanese woodland orchid that emerges from the pseudobulb with 2-3 heavily pleated, 6' long x 2' wide leaves. As the bulb offsets, the clumps can get quite thick. The foliage, which is evergreen to 15 degrees F, is topped in mid-spring with 10' stalks of tiny mahogany flowers with pure white lower lips...a very easy-to-grow addition to that special spot in the woodland garden.
