The classic golden-flowered yarrow is an old-world herb that grows on sturdy stems to a height of 120cm (47”). Attractive in the middle or back of the perennial bed, from late June to September the plant bears 15cm (6”) wide heads of tightly compressed, brilliant yellow flowers. Yarrow is highly drought-resistant, and has been used for centuries as a companion plant in the vegetable garden – its scent repels aphids, but attracts hoverflies, ladybugs and wasps that feed on common garden grubs. As if this weren’t enough, yarrow contains enzymes that break down swiftly and are released, speeding the breakdown of materials in composts.

Fiesta Gitana is a dwarf selection of annual Calendula flowers in a rich, warm range of colours from deep orange to pastel cream. Plants are compact, growing to only 25cm (10") tall, so they are perfectly suited for containers or edging the garden bed. The flower petals are edible, and look superb sprinkled over salads and smart drinks for your summer parties.
