This represents a notable acceleration from the pace of the 2004-2009 period. Advances will be stimulated by an upswing in manufacturing activity and the continued proliferation of Internet shopping in both developed and devel-oping regions. These factors will neces-sitate heightened requirements for cost-effective packaging used in the protec-tion of goods from shock, vibration, abrasion and other damaging effects of shipping and handling.Developing regions to see most rapid increases in demandWhile the US is by far the world’s largest user of protective packaging, the most rapid increases will occur in developing regions. The Asia/Pacific region, Central and South America, and the Africa/Mideast region will all outpace the global average. Population growth, greater urbanization, industrialization trends and increases in international trade activity will support advances in these regions’ generally underdeveloped packaging sectors. Rising consumer income levels and expanding middle classes will also generate robust internal demand for packaged consumer goods, boosting protective packaging requirements. Some of the best growth opportunities will occur in Asia, which is expected to see double-digit annual growth through the forecast period. In particular, China alone is expected to account for one-quarter of global value gains in protec-tive packaging demand between 2009 and 2014.Protective mailers, air pillows, bubble packaging to grow the fastestOverall, foamed plastic protective packaging will remain the largest product type by a wide margin. Demand will be aided by foamed plastic’s light weight and excellent cushioning capabilities compared to paperboard and other materials. However, the growing empha-sis on packaging sustainability -- espe-cially in developed countries with more established environmental regulations -- will constrain opportunities for conven-tional foamed plastic protective packag-ing to some extent. Protective mailers and other protective packaging products such as air pillows and bubble packaging will continue to experience the fastest gains. Among factors driving growth will be performance and environmental advantages, as well as a continued robust outlook for electronic commerce, which will fuel the need for packaging products offering enhanced resistance to impact, abrasion and temperature changes during movement of goods through the supply chain.Copyright 2010 The Freedonia Group, Inc.Click here to purchase onlineGrowth in protective packaging demand will be driven by an upswing in manufacturing activity and the continued proliferation of Internet shopping in both developed and developing regions.World Protective Packaging Demand($15.3 billion, 2009)Asia/Pacific33%Other Regions12%North America29%Western Europe26%Study #2651June 2010$5800380 PagesWorld Protective PackagingIndustry Study with Forecasts for 2014 & 2019Page 5 Order now, click hereClick here to purchase onlinemarketsIndia: Protective Packaging Demand Demand for protective packaging in India totaled $235 million in 2009, accounting for five percent of the regional market. The country represents a relatively underdeveloped packaging market, due largely to its huge, impoverished and mostly rural population. Personal income levels remain very low, by both regional and global standards. As a result, per capita spending on packaged goods is minimal. Furthermore, the use of cheap and/or reusable packaging alternatives, such as news-paper, jute bags and wood crates, in lieu of more expensive protective packaging will also limit demand. Nonetheless, while the usage intensity of protective packaging in India is among the lowest in the world, demand is experiencing fast growth. Demand will continue to be fueled by rapid development in the country’s manufacturing sector. Gains will also be propelled by the expansion of India’s urban middle classes, the primary consumers of packaged products. In addition, strong growth in the number of retail stores as well as the number of online shoppers will continue to boost demand for protective packaging. Through 2014, protective packaging demand in India is projected to increase at a robust 13.6 percent annual rate to $445 million. This rep-resents one of the most rapid growth rates in the world over the forecast period -- albeit from a relatively small base (especially compared to the US or China). Strong economic expansion, increases in manufactur-ing activity, growth in living standards, rising domestic consumption of packaged goods and urbanization trends will all support gains. Inter-est in higher-quality, more aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly packaging will also fuel growth as the role of marketing takes on greater importance. Greater investment in state-of-the-art manufactur-ing equipment will improve product quality, further bolstering protective packaging sales162 Copyright 2010 The Freedonia Group, Inc.samPLE TExTsample Text, Table & CharttaBLe VI-7INDIa -- PrOteCtIVe PaCkaGINGmarket eNVIrONmeNt Item 1999 2004 2009 2014 2019Population (million persons) 1006 1090 1172 1251 1329 $ GDP/capita 1790 2180 3030 4010 5240Gross Domestic Product (bil 2008$) 1798 2379 3550 5020 6965 % manufacturing 16.1 15.8 15.5 16.3 16.7Manufacturing Value Added (bil 2008$) 289 375 549 820 1165 $ protective packaging/000$ MVA 0.26 0.33 0.43 0.54 0.67Protective Packaging Demand (mil $) 75 125 235 445 775 % India 3.4 3.7 4.7 5.5 6.3Asia/Pacific Protective Packaging (mil $) 2190 3350 4950 8020 12210samPLE TabLECHart VIII-1WOrLD PrOteCtIVe PaCkaGING market sHare($15.3 billion, 2009)MarketLeaders14.8%Others85.2%S to ro p a c kT e g ra n tP re g i sS e a l e d A i r1 .8 %2 .0 %3 .3 %7 .8 %samPLE CharTStudy #2651June 2010$5800380 PagesWorld Protective PackagingIndustry Study with Forecasts for 2014 & 2019Page 6 Order now, click hereClick here to purchase onlinePolyair Inter Pack Incorporated330 Humberline DriveToronto, Ontario M9W 1R5Canada416-679-6600http://www.polyair.comAnnual Sales: US$120 million (estimated)Employment: 535 (estimated)Key Products: bubble material, foam products, mailers and packaging systems Polyair Inter Pack is a privately held manufacturer of packaging, insulation products and pool covers.
