ForestryRZ_05_Forestry_102008.qxd:Layout 1 12.11.2008 16:33 Uhr Seite 2Forests are important ecosystems that have a systemic impact on the biodiversity, the water cycle and micro-climate of a region and are currently under threatworldwide. Changes in land use, forest fires, unsustainable exploitation of forests, natural disaster events - such as storms, droughts, insect infestation - lead tolarge areas of deforestation and degradation. Thus, there is a requirement for both qualitative and quantitative forest informationfor the assessment and monitoring of forest resources. These needs have beenunderscored in many national, regional policies and international Conventions.Earth Observation (EO) data can provide information for the regular assessmentand monitoring of well defined forest parameters. This data can be combinedwith in-situ measurements in order to provide improved spatially accurate andtimely information for sustainable forest management.GAF AG has successfully managed a variety of forest and environmental projects.Solutions are customised to address local, regional, national and internationaluser requirements from both public and private sector. Key services and productsinclude land cover and forest maps, change maps, as well as forest informationdatabases. In this context GAF AG has taken a lead role in the successful implementation of Forest Monitoring Services within the European framework ofthe Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme.RZ_05_Forestry_102008.qxd:Layout 1 14.11.2008 14:55 Uhr Seite 3Consulting ExpertiseFOREST MAPPINGMeasuring and Monitoring of- Forest area- Forest type- Forest structure- Damage analysis- Forest change detection- Deforestation mapping- Degradation mappingBIOMASS AND CARBON STOCKS- Estimation of baselines- Afforestation, Reforestation and Deforestation (ARD)- Mapping and monitoring- Carbon stock assessment- Temporal change analysisBIODIVERSITY- Spatial landscape analysis- Index Mapping for:- Forest and land use patterns- Forest fragmentation- Species diversity- Core habitatsFOREST MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS- EO and GIS based monitoring solutions- Field data collection systems- System integration- Capacity building for the integrationof spatial technologiesRZ_05_Forestry_102008.qxd:Layout 1 12.11.2008 16:34 Uhr Seite 4In summary, GAF offers a comprehensive portfolio of proven products, servicesand expertise that cost effectively meets the diverse requirements of forest andenvironmental professionals, practitioners, policy and decision makers worldwide. The solutions offered are continually evolving to meet the demands of a dynamicsector that will confront complex challenges in the years ahead.
