LI-3000C Portable Leaf Area Meter Brochure
LI-3000C Portable Area MeterAnd LI-3050C Transparent Belt Conveyer AccessoryFAST • PRECISE • EASY OPERATIONLI-3000C Portable Area MeterLeaf Area of Living Plants or Detached Leaves in the Field or Laboratory¦ Non-destructive leaf area measurement in the field¦ 1 mm2 resolution¦ Displays and stores individual leaf area, accumulatedarea, leaf length, average width, maximum width¦ Data storage for up to 125,000 individual leaf measurements¦ RS-232 and USB ports¦ Lightweight for portability¦ Precise measurement of perforated and irregular margin leaves¦ Easily combined with a belt conveyer system for lab use (using LI-3050C)¦ Simple Windows®software for file transferand real-time data collectionThe Windows® interface software provided collects data files trans-ferred from the LI-3000C console. Data files can be saved separatelyor combined into a single, larger data file. The LI-3000C supportsboth RS-232 and USB data transfer. The interface software also allows the user to monitor data on acomputer and store readings in a log file. Realtime Capture Mode, initiated from the LI-3000C console, transmits data directly to thecomputer. This feature is most commonly used in combination with the LI-3050C Transparent Belt Conveyer Accessory. RealtimeCapture can save time when logging large amounts of data, as filesdo not need to be transferred to the computer. Log files includeindividual area, cumulative area, maximum width, average width, length, and average area. Remarks can be entered for each loggedvalue. These files are easily opened in most spreadsheet or text editor programs.Interface SoftwareThe LI-3000C provides a non-destructive, precise method to measure leaf area. Leaf area development or reduction associatedwith conditions of insect infestation, drought, disease or air pollution can be measured in the field or in growth chambers.Leaf area can be monitored without damaging the plants. Thisallows precise evaluation of plant canopy development throughoutthe growing season. The effects of diminishing the stand density thatoccurs when plants are harvested for measurement are eliminated. This technique allows area data collection in the field before thedetached leaves appreciably shrink or curl. For many experiments, the need to transport samples away from the plot site is eliminated. The remaining area of insect-damaged leaves can also be measured.Data can be collected from the same plant throughout its life cycle. For severely damaged leaves, a transparent sheath can be used to support the remaining tissue. Forest canopy or urban foliage development can be recorded for purposes such as evaluating air pollution effects or pest damage. The LI-3000C’s lightweight construction and long-life rechargeablebattery (12 hours) provide extensive versatility for field use.Readout Console OperationFor each leaf area measurement the LI-3000C records values of leafarea, leaf length, average width and maximum width. Each of thesevalues can be shown on the display. Individual leaf area values canalso be added to a secondary summing register to collect accumulat-ed leaf area data for leaf area index or whole plant leaf area. After ameasurement, the area data are stored using a convenient file systemalong with a time stamp from the real time clock and an alphanu-meric remark to identify the data (e.g., field #, leaf #, plot #, etc).Data can be collected with the Windows software included....... and opened in most spreadsheet or text editor programs. Theory Of OperationThe LI-3000C Portable Area Meter utilizes an electronic method ofrectangular approximation providing 1 mm2 resolution. The majorcomponents are the scanning head and the readout console. Areadata are recorded by the readout console as the scanning head ispassed over the leaf.Width ScanningObject width is scanned by sequentially pulsing a row of 128 narrow-band, red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) located on 1 mmcenters in the upper section of the scanning head. The LEDs arelocated 6.4 mm from the edge of the scanning head, permittingmeasurement close to the base of the leaf. The lower section of the scanning head contains a lens-photodiodesystem which responds to the LED light. When one or more LEDsare masked by some object which passes through the scanning head, the width is measured (i.e. 3 LEDs masked are sensed as 3 mm width). The LEDs and associated digital circuitry providemeasurements which are unaffected by leaf transmission propertiesor ambient light.Length ScanningA length encoding cord, with one end held against a stationaryobject, is drawn out of the scanning head as the head is moved overthe leaf. The LEDs are sequentially pulsed once for each 1 mm ofcord travel. For example, if a 20 mm width x 100 mm length objectis measured, 20 LEDs will be masked for 100 scanning cycles, resulting in a display of 20.00 cm2. Accuracy is unaffected by thescanning speed (1 meter s-1 maximum rate).AreaThe area is integrated and displayed as the scanning head is drawnover the leaf. Leaves with irregular margins or with holes, as in casesof insect damage, are correctly measured by the LI-3000C. As theportion of leaf with the hole passes through the scanning head, the lens-photodiode system senses the LED light. That particularLED location does not contribute to the accumulated area on thedisplay until the LEDs are once again masked by a portion of leafwithout a hole.1) The scanning head is opened and placed over the leaf. The lengthencoding cord is held stationary against a stable object, usually thestem at the base of the leaf. The scanning head is closed at the base ofthe leaf and the reset button is pressed to initiate a new measurement.2) The closed scanning head is drawn over the leaf, allowing the leafapex to pass through completely. Scanning Head OperationLI-3050CThe LI-3000C scanning head slides into the LI-3050C for measuring large numbers of detached leaves. In Realtime Capture Mode, data are transmitted through the LI-3000C (or through the LI-3050C) directly to a computer.LI-3050C – Transparent Belt ConveyerAccessoryLarge numbers of detached leaves often are more efficiently meas-ured using the LI-3000C Portable Area Meter in combination withthe LI-3050C Transparent Belt Conveyer Accessory. The completeLI-3000C circuitry is utilized to provide a sophisticated laboratoryinstrument for a broad range of area analysis requirements.Advantages of the LI-3000C and LI-3050C Combination¦ Fast, automatic operation for large numbers of samples¦ Accuracy within ±1%¦ Rugged and durable transparent belts¦ Ease of belt cleaning and adjustment¦ Rapid logging and storage of individual or cumulative area¦ Data can be displayed and logged on a computerMeasurement ProcessThe two units are coupled by sliding the LI-3000C scanning headinto the LI-3050C assembly such that the upper and lower beltspass through the scanning head. In this mode, the conveyer beltmoves at a constant speed to provide the encoded length informa-tion to the LI-3000C (the length encoding cord is not used).Samples are placed on the lower transparent belt and allowed topass through the LI-3000C scanning head. Accumulated area isshown on the LI-3000C display or on a computer screen whenusing the LI-3000C application software. The measurement is initiated using the reset button located on the front panel of the LI-3050C.LI-3000C Specifications*Resolution: 1 mm2 (1 mm x 1 mm scanning area).Accuracy: Within ± 2% for samples > 50 cm2.Display Capacity: Area: 9,999,999.99 cm2, Length: 99,999,999.9 cm, Width: 12.8 cmDisplay: 2 line x 16 character LCDKeyboard: Sealed, 24 key tactile response with audio feedback.Real Time Clock: Year, month, day, hour, minute, second.Accuracy: ± 3 minutes per month (0-55 °C).Internal Memory: More than 2.1 MB of non-volatile FLASH.
