When vertebrates first made the move to land, it was a decisive step in the history of life, because since then, life hasn`t left the continents. Technological evolution is now following a biological evolution. This time it`s not the seafish, who are moving to land - it`s the ocean itself. In the last few decades, over the course of the worldwide overfishing, aquaculture developed into an alternative to cover the increasing human demand for fish. Every second fish eaten in the world already originates from farmed production. Currently marine aquaculture is operated exclusively in coastal areas, which causes extensive problems, such as the discharge of waste and nutrients, the escape of farmed fish or the transmission of diseases among wild stocks. Furthermore, also conflicts of interests with other users lead to a constant discussion about the sustainability of this technology.
