It’s an obligation to reduce the environmental impact ofbuildings during their lifespan, especially when it comes to the new and refurbishment projects we’re involved with. We ensure that buildings are comfortable while minimisingtheir energy consumption and costs, but that’s not the only way.We also apply this principle to both the building process aswell as the design. Our engineers and architects ‘design out’traditional mechanical and electrical systems in favour ofpassive solutions that consume little or no energy. We thenincrease efficiency to reduce the impact and costs associatedwith maintenance. Our team are constantly focused on this corerequirement of our work and our qualified assessors areapproved to carry out assessments including BREEAM,EcoHomes and Code for Sustainable Homes.Life is about much more than work and we actively supportsmall community projects. It’s positive and also frequentlygood fun. The building projects we work on usually have adirect impact on local communities and it can be a powerfulexperience to meet the people who have to live with ‘our work’. This ethos of community action is part of our companyculture and all our offices are committed to acting locallyand supporting employees who want to take action.A few examples include regular contributions to help over1000 young Wakefield people learn practical skills with the Outward Bound Community Leadership programme;sponsored walking and canoeing over three days raisedfunds for Torbay’s Special Care Baby Unit and our surpluscomputer equipment was recently passed on to theUniversity of Nigeria in Nsukka.12 nps nps 13Growth or people? I’ve been with NPS since its very early days and it’s clear that our ability to offer a service, which can integrate newbuild, refurbishment, property management and strategicconsultancy, is very attractive to our current and prospectiveclients. The fact that this breadth of services is delivered by specialists who know each other and work together, hasbeen integral to our success. In 22 years we have grown to over 1300 people in 28 officesacross the UK. We know it helps that our people have a deepknowledge of their surrounding area, which only happens if they live there too.
