Inside Back CoverCOMPANY PROFILESolar West has been providing innovative solutions to summer and winter livestock watering since 2001. Since this time, Solar West has grown to become an industry leader in delivering an innovative and high quality product to our costumers. In 2008, F.P. Bourgault Tillage Tools Ltd. recognized the potential of Solar West and made the decision to purchase the company, relocating operations to St. Brieux Saskatchewan. The directors and shareholders of Bourgault Tillage Tools were interested in alternate energy sources and helping to alleviate our planet of pollution and Solar West fit into this philosophy. Since the acquisition of Solar West, under the guidance of many experienced people from Bourgault Tillage Tools, the company has been busy defining itself as a leader in high quality livestock watering solutions. It has a dedicated R & D department that is committed to high quality and innovative designs. It is the company’s mandate, as it has been with Bourgault Tillage Tools, to provide Gold Standard customer service. You can be assured that Solar West will be around well into the future to support your system and provide you with exceptional service and the most up to date technology.2From a product standpoint, Solar West is in the business of providing cost effective and innovative solutions to watering your livestock while using the most up to date and environmentally friendly technology available. Solar West watering systems can be portable and use solar and wind power to provide clean water in areas where no power is available. There are many proven benefits both financially and healthwise when livestock have a clean source of water. Solar West watering systems keep livestock out of the lakes, rivers, streams and dugouts preserving our fresh water, which has been a top priority for governments as well as many ranchers. Our team of Product Specialists and R & D experts has assembled a top quality line of products that can meet all livestock watering needs. Talk to your local dealer or contact Solar West to find out how our systems can work for you.34Why Choose an Alternative Watering System?A lot of independent research has gone into understanding the benefits of using alternative watering systems over traditional methods of watering. Much of the research agrees that the advantages are numerous and ultimately lead to reduced costs, improved gains, and healthier animals. Other benefits include saves time, provides peace of mind and makes a positive impact on the environment. Healthier LivestockA solar powered watering system will keep cattle out of open water sources that could otherwise become contaminated with excrement and saliva. This may also lead to problems such as foot rot and accidental drowning. Reduced CostsProviding your livestock with a constant source of fresh clean water has many positive impacts on the overall health of the animals reducing costs associated with vet bills and medication. With a winter watering system, you can allow your herds to winter graze reducing the cost of spreading manure in the spring and increasing the production of your pasture & hay crops. Increased GainsThe formula is simple; with cleaner water your livestock will drink more and when they drink more they consume more feed. With the increase in feed consumption you will see greater gains in your livestock. Saves you timeOnce a watering system is installed there is no day-to-day operation required. With only some maintenance required from time-to-time, you can spend less time watering your livestock and more time on the important things.Peace of Mind A watering system means you don’t have to worry about cattle accidentally drowning, deteriorated banks or the quality of water in your troughs.Positive Impact on the EnvironmentMany Governments and Watershed Authorities are passing bylaws against livestock having direct access to fresh, open watering sources. You are able to preserve that lake, stream or dugout by setting up an alternative watering system. You can further reduce your impact on the environment by using a solar powered system. If you have any other questions about the research that has been done for alternative watering systems talk to your local dealer or visit our website at www.solarwest.ca. 5Research StudiesThere has been a lot of very informative research done on solar powered watering systems that verify the benefits of using this type of system. Below are two of the more predominate studies that have been completed over the last decade:Western Beef Development Centre – The Effects of Water Quality on Cattle Weight GainAlong with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the Western Beef Development Centre set out to determine how remote watering, aeration, and coagulation of water sources can increase gains in cattle. Through five years of testing, it was discovered that there was a significant increase in gains to livestock herds as well as an increase in the health of the animals. For more information on this study you can visit: www.solarwest.ca or www.wbdc.sk.ca/. You may also wish to reference the article published by the research group: Lardner HA, Kirychuk BD, Braul L, Willms WD and Yarotski J. 2005. The effect of water quality on cattle performance on pasture. Australian Journal of Agricultural Research. 56:1-8Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada – Water Quality MattersBetween October 2001 and March 2002 Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada released several studies on the benefits of water quality to cattle production. These studies highlighted the increased gains, positive health benefits and feasibility of alternative watering systems. These articles contain a lot of useful information when deciding what type of system will work best for your operation. For more information on this study you can visit: www.agr.gc.ca/pfra or www.solarwest.ca Government GrantsSolar West is aware that there are government grants available to help producers with the cost of Alternative Livestock Watering systems. In order to ensure that Solar West systems qualify, our product specialist has been working with the government agencies. In many provinces and states you will find that the cost of your system could be subsidized up to 50%. Below we have compiled a list of current programs that provide funding. These programs may change or be covered by another organization. A wet well is created beside your dugout to avoid contamination from the drained back water. Wind ChargerSolarPanelSolar Panels and Wind Turbine charge 12 volt batteries. The battery power is then used to power the submersible pump. A motion eye is installed around the trough so it only pumps when there are cattle near. This system can be used all year because the water drains back into the well as soon as it is pumped. In this system a complete unit is backed up to the dugout where a floating pump is placed in the water. A float switch is installed in the trough to maintain the level of water. The first thing we noticed was the calves would run to the water station and get their water before their mother’s arrival. The mother cows would leave for the range and the calves would stay at the station. The 2009 year brought us a drought. A half inch of rain fell in May and no rain fell until late October. The grass was short, vigor was poor, and the range was very dry and dusty. We calved about 2 weeks later then past years and weaned about a month early. The calves weaned off with heavier weaning weights, and the only explanation is that drinking fresh clean water throughout the summer despite the drought made the weight difference. The year 2010 has brought us some rain; the grass is green, thick and growing fast. I can’t wait to see the fall calf weights this fall at weaning time. The water station is a good investment and easy to set up. I wish I had purchased a water station years ago.Darryl & Sheryl Smith Rogers North Dakota33221 5th Ave South - P.O.
