Land based production of Atlantic salmon is increasing continuously. Different production regimes are used, and recirculation (RAS) technology is for many a necessary tool. While some fresh water sites produce smolt or post smolt for transfer to open sea sites, others are farming market size fish on land. There are several advantages with land based production. The sites are run with very low use of water, and it is possible to keep tight control of water quality and environment parameters. In a closed system set up with RAS technology, fish can be produced with a high level of biosecurity. Pathogens may be stopped before they reach the fish tanks.
