Sugarcane is the world’s largest crop by production quantity. It is cultivated to produce sugar and liquor and technological advances have helped create diverse products like ethanol, bioelectricity, and bioplastics as well. There are five sugarcane liquors and rum produced from molasses is the most common. Variability of crops presents a quality control challenge for producers, as random sampling is often insufficient for determining sugar quality parameters like CCS (Commercial Cane Sugar – extractable sucrose minus impurities) - a basis for crop cost. Ethanol content is important for final product analysis. Traditional methods for monitoring parameters of interest include HPLC, GC, wet chemistry. These methods are labor intensive, time-consuming, can only measure one parameter at a time, and can require the use of expensive solvents and reagents.
